Just bought a new computer from chillblast. Big improvement from my old one except for one irritating issue. It sometimes won't eject the external drives that I use for back up. I get a message saying that "windows is unable to stop the device. Close programmes using it and try again" the only software that is on the computer is lightroom, elements and Photomatix pro.

When the drive hangs up like this the computer will not shut down. Just sits with the shutting down screen displayed until I get fed up and force a shutdown on it. It does it with both my external drives. I've scanned everything for a virus and it all comes back clean.

I've arranged with chillblast for them to take remote control of the computer this week but was just wondering if anyone has encountered similar problems. Browsing. Google it seems to be quite common.

Computer running Windows 7 64 bit.

It's probably windows trying to index the drive(s) you can turn that off somewhere.
With your whizzy fast new PC it won't be as important to have things indexed beforehand.
If it is that, you could try just leaving it for longer, once caught up it might not be so bad done as you go.

It definitely takes my external drive a lot longer to shut down the first couple of times it is connected. Suspect the all wheels fella could be on the right lines:)

I have an Asrock m/b on my i7 PC and that has someting called Fast USB which is supposed to really speed up USB 3 but I have found this can cause External HDDs to hang.

So I usually just turn it off now and that seems to help.

At other times it nearly always turns out to be me forgetting to close something.

I'm also running WIN 7 (64bit)
