extenuation tubes and Nikon 70-300 mm VR f4.5-5.6

Hi I was thinking of getting some Auto extension tubes adn I was wondering if they would work ok on Nikon 70-300 mm VR f4.5-5.6. as In the information book indicates that they can not be used?

I also have Nikon 18-70 mm Dx would they work on this lens ok ?

Of course they can be used, are you sure the book isn't talking about teleconverters??

Anyway, the 18-70 will get you closer due to a greater maximum magnification natively.
