I'm thinking of purchasing a 25mm or 50mm extension tube to use with my nifty fifty for macro work. Any comments, recommendations, warnings etc? What kit should I look at?

Hiya greg - I have used a 50mm tube with my nifty fifty. They work fine - but beware, the DOF is EXTREME !!! Will hunt an image out and post it here .... hold on.

Thanks magpieant. When you say DOF is extreme I suppose you mean a few mm. How about focusing distance? What brand tube have you? Sorry so many questions.

Right ....

If I remember rightly, this

was with a 50mm ext tube on the nifty fifty. Obviously the 25mm tube will give you more DOF - but you can achieve some very interesting results!!!!

Hi Greg ...

Quick one before bed .....

I have the kenko set http://www.digitalfotoclub.com/from-froogle.asp?id=964598351&rf=froogle&dfdate=10_8_2007 which are handy as you have a range of different combinations.

The closer you get to the actual lens length - eg 50mm tube on 50mm lens - the shallower your DOF and also focusing distance.

The good thing about these tubes is that I can also use them on my 70-300 nicely as well as other lenses - deffo worth the buy to experiment with macro, as I couldn't afford the Sigma 150mm lens ;) Although I'm still working on that one :)

PS - in case you're wondering, i got mine from onestopdigital.

Good luck.

Anth.

Thanks again Anth.

Not a few mm.... think more like half a mm! Can work well with the right subject.

Don't forget the Life Size Converter. It is specifically marketed for the EF50/2.5 but works fine with other 50's....and other lengths. It's a T/C and tubes combined to give 1:1 and an acceptable working distance.

Thanks Bob. I'll look at that as well.

I wonder has anyone actually used the Life Size Converter with the Canon 50mm f1.8.
