Yes
Afternoon, would they help with macro or are they just a gimmick..

They are not a gimmick they give very good results for macro work for how much they cost.

Yep they work, got a cheapo set myself, none AF. Works a treat with the 50mm.

Don't know anything about them, worth a try then?.. as i said earlier i'm quite new to this lark, how do they work for macro?

You can place different size rings on the camera which moves the lens further from the sensor so it increases the macro effect. The set I have has 3 rings and when all 3 are on it gives better than 1:1 macro effect. Only paid something like £10 for them on ebay

Red Damslefly
This Damslefly is only around 5cm long and very thin.

Canon 1DMKIIN

Cool! Is a ring flash a worthy addition to macro tubes and lenses or should I just stick to a "speedlight"?

excuse my ignorance ,in what way does it effect the way the camera operates(ie).. aperture and exposure settings..

The tubes have no effect on aperture and exposure settings, your camera will take care of everything. As for ringflash thats personal choice i, use my canon ex 580 fitted with a stofen and if needed i use the ex 450 as a slave unit. Ringflashes cost a lot of money and you can get 2 guns for the price of a good ringflash. You can then use the guns for other things not just macro, but i still might get a ringflash one day.

With ref to the above post ....

The tube may effect how the camera measures the exposure if the ext tube do not have contacts in them. I.e, you may have to go fully manual.

You can buy tubes that have these contacts in to allow fully auto metering and focusing, but they cost more. Plus, you will probs want to manually focus anyway as you will be that close up.

I am currently awaiting some of these from onestop ;)

Good luck.

Your right magpieant i didnt think of tubes without contacts, do they make them without.

Thanks for your input

There's about £40 quid difference for a set of 3.
About a tenner or so without from fleabay

Yep,

After doing a bit of research myself I found that they do make them with and without the contacts.

One's without are dirt cheap and loads on Ebay. The ones with the contacts cost about £70-80 new.

I opted for Kenko ones with contacts (help me master camera before going fully manual) from onestop. Looking forward to using them once they arrive.

As for ring flashes, couldn't say - never used one. I did however read this article in a mag recently (cheers Ven ;) ) about a little device that sits over your normal flash and reflects it through a tube like structure over the lens to create a ring flash. I forget the name of it, but they looked quite good, had decent reviews and were canny cheap too!!!
