What settings are you using when "exporting" images from Lightroom for posting on this Forum?
- my settings are - jpeg - 1000 x 1000 and sometimes 1200 x 1200 - sRGB IEC61966-2.1 - Resolution 150 pixels per inch - limit the file size to 150K - sharpened for screen

Mine seem to be a lot less vibrant and sometimes not as sharp when I post them on here

I'm not using Flicker or anything like that, I just upload them to my own web space and then link the image on here to that space

Pixels per inch is irrelevant. An inch of what?
When posting to the web for display on a screen, 1000 pixels is 1000 pixels is 1000 pixels.

Just choose your dimensions and make sure the compression is low enough not to exceed to size limit, or use the size limiter built into LR.

The only time you need to consider PPI is when printing.

What Elliot said.

My settings are 1000 x1000 at 500kB max.

My images as presented here are always softer than I expect and it's probably to do with some sort of compression the forum software uses. The best results are when you link to an outside site for image hosting (like Flickr) but even then there is some compression as when I click through to someone's Flickr site, the images are often sharper and more vibrant there.

ppi is largely ignored by LR when specifying actual pixel dimensions. It's used when you specify physical dimensions (in inches or cm) such as those used for a print. In that case it will add/remove pixels as required to give you the correct ppi rating for a size (in inches) of print. If it's for screen display, inches are unimportant, because something like an iPhone can have a relatively small (in inches) screen, but a super high (in pixels) resolution. Likewise, old monitors or flatscreen tellys can have big (in inches) screens and a low (in pixels) resolution. Generally, you have no control over the device your viewers will look at your images on. And generally, the image viewer in those devices will often resize the image anyway based on the device size.

Thanks Ian ...... the above is what I'm finding both with colour and B & W ....... on some images I'm seeing quite a difference

Ian is correct that the forum will be compressing the images to make them as small as possible but looking at the file size that both Ian and Gramps saves the files to (500Kb) compared to your 150Kb means that LR is will be compressing your images a lot more to accommodate that file size.

I usually post from Flickr so file size never concerns me, but have look at what the maximum file size is for the forum and use that as the file size setting for your images. The larger the file size, the less LR has to compress the image when exporting it.

I thought that I was being "kind" to the Forum by not posting "large" images

I upload to Flickr at 72ppi and 1600px long side generally. I might go 2840px or whatever it is for a more panoramic image. I then use the bbcode to display on here at 1600 or 1280(?) for verticals selecting the Large option as sometimes the Original option (although physically the same size) is a bigger file size.

I just export at full-sized jpeg, upload to Flickr then use their image adjustment to send a link of longest side 1024 px, that way, if someone wants to pixel peep then there is a full-sized image to do it on, I tried not using Flickr but it's such a faff it's not worth it.

I should have said; if you want to just use lightroom, set the export to sharpen for print- high (I can't see a difference between glossy/mat)... I normally have export sharpening turned off.

Thanks Steven - are you saying use sharpen for print rather than sharpen for screen when exporting the jpeg

Yes, and only for posting here.
Sharpening for print requires more aggressive settings than sharpening for screen, which helps offset the softening that occurs here. Normally, I don't let LR do any automatic sharpening...
