Yes
I have just sold and bought some used cameras recently so I'm sitting on the fence.

Would you expect the batteries to be of the same age or newer than the camera.

If you bought a Camera from 2009 would you expect the battery to work well.

I am still using the original battery in my Canon 1D mk4 which I bought in 2010 with no problems at all.

Same here, bought a camera from 2008 and no issues with the battery. I suppose to an extent depends what type, model and how much use it had previously. When buying second I always look ahead of what battery it takes and how much they go for as after all they are a consumable.

I would expect the battery/batteries with the camera to work well (80% or better) unless the seller states the battery has low capacity.

I think it would be unfair to buy a camera and find the battery is very low capacity without the seller stating it.

I also look at battery availability and price when looking at any camera.

If they have been left empty for months/years that seems to be what kills them

I know from experience that MPB would penalise you if the battery life wasn't good....they'd take away the price of a replacement battery (yet not return the old one....)..

If I was buying used the least I would expect is at least one good battery...often I get 2 or maybe 3.

I bought a camera from MPB 3 weeks ago, it was dead on arrival so I fully charged the battery, it only showed one bar and depleted in minutes. I'm guessing they charged it before dispatch or when checking it, but due to it being old and useless it discharged in transit.

I'm still waiting for a fresh battery from them, apparently one may arrive today.

It depends... I would hope to have the correct battery and a genuine battery rather than third party.

My two bodies require different batteries.

I have four batteries for my 1DX2. One came with the camera. One was a lower capacity version which I kept from my 1D4 and I've picked up two more secondhand. Depending on what I replace it with depends on what batteries I keep back.

I have four batteries for my 7D2. One came with the camera. Two came with a battery grip I added, and there is an older one from a previous camera. All these will work in my new R7 - but if I sell the 7D2 I will probably keep a couple back for the R7.

Being selfish, the batteries I retain will be the best in terms of performance, but the ones that go with the camera will be the correct spec, and I would disclose the performance rating. I would declare lower power versions of the battery accordingly.

I seldom buy new cameras, so take the approach that I will have to purchase new batteries separately. It's just a pity that too few cameras share the same type of battery...

(By the way, "batteries" is the plural of "battery", whereas "battery's" is the possessive of "battery" and raises the question: "battery's what?" :naughty: )

I would ask the seller for information about battery condition and factor the answer/non-answer into the buying decision.

Interesting replies, Thank you.

I got a used camera from Wex which had 2 batteries, one is 3 years older than the camera, but it seems to be the better battery.

I also consider batteries to be consumables like with laptops and phones, I would consider that a battery may be on it's last legs at 4 years or older.

I have just sold a compact camera from 2009, which I charged the battery about a month ago and have used to check it was working ok and took a picture to check it was still working before the buyer paid for the camera. They had a little moan about that the battery and that there was no card in it. They got the camera for a bargain and have purchased a replacement battery, so they seem to be ok about it.
