Expanding batteries is that even a thing?

No
The battery in my M50 is a snug fit, it slides into the bottom of the M50.
I went to change it this morning as it appeared to be flat.

It was pretty much jammed in there, and a little force was required to get it out.
The other two, Canon, and the other Neewer fit fine.

That's the first time ever, that I come across the issue.

Cells can expand I believe when a battery is old and/or overcharged.
Its less than 2 years old, and slid into the compartment no problem

Guessing it's a li-ion if it had swollen I'd be putting it somewhere outside where it can't burn your house down.

It was a common problem in some Dji drones sometimes enough to push the battery off in flight (not a good thing).
The expansion increases when they get hot discharging or charging.
Not really safe to use especially if it might get jammed in the camera

Sniff the battery compartment (not battery).

1st thing I did TBH well second, once it was out of the camera (y)
Sniff the battery compartment (not battery).
All good, no sign ( smell) of over heating.

As above I've never heard of or come across this in all my years..

Everyday is a school day as the saying goes

Sniff the battery compartment (not battery).

Great link. Lol

Depending on age it should come under warranty I'd imagine if you have miss used it.

Good, but ifixit, also says:

You may notice a sweet, metallic chemical smell which could be battery gas escaping a swollen battery.

I expect you would might need to sniff early on though the gas could fill the camera and hang about.

Had this on my Fuji xt3 sometimes, even with genuine batteries. Was especially prevalent when filming in 4K for prolonged periods as the camera got very hot, but it did also happen when just taking photos.

Had an ExPro Black battery swell and jam in my Fuji X-E2, chucked it out once it was removed.

Batteries do fail. Fortunately the first sign is usually swelling. It would be far more unfortunate if they were just to catch fire no warning.
Dispose of all such batteries on first signs. It is not worth taking the risk.

It is just as likely to happen to genuine as it is with look alikes.
All batteries eventually fail, most simply won't hold a charge anymore. Some swell, a very few catch fire and explode. There is no way of knowing in advance.

I agree 100%. Additionally li-ion batteries can swell when in storage as the problem is a chemical reaction. I've seen laptop batteries swell and still pass diagnostics, other times not. The only ones that had the very distinctive smell had been got at by someone trying to incorrectly prize it out of a laptop and puncturing it. Many laptop batteries don't have any protective covering over their thin skin, this is to keep weight size down. I've seen some laptop batteries swell to multiple times their normal depth, worse should have been around no more than 10mm thick, it split and expanded to at least 60mm after pushing off the base. Never yet seen one catch fire, that's more likely if you puncture it when charged. Have only had one camera battery swell a little, and that was a genuine Nikon battery that shipped with the body. Never ever carry charged camera or pmr batteries with exposed contacts in your pockets with keys or coins, you can end up with very nasty burns if they short. Royal Mail won't carry loose li-ion batteries, and there are strict rules re carrying on planes, all for valid reasons.

I had to remove one that was swollen in my Daughters Olympus compact.
Also had one that swole in storage for My Minolta G 600 Compact and another that stuck in my Canon G3

As you can see these were all pretty old cameras and batteries. I have not had the same thing happen to more recent Batteries so either they are getting better or I have just been lucky.

I had an iPhone where the battery expanded and pushed the screen out of the frame. A common problem at the time.
