Well playing golf on the Wii at the moment and then going Ice skating with a friend later this evening, not sure if matt is joining us or not, so wondering has anyone been skating lately and any advice to offer????

Tie your laces very tightly! Other than that plan on hurting like hell tomorrow but having a blast tonight.

LOL - your laces should be tight on the foot, and then snug, but NOT tight, on the ankle. WEAR GLOVES! I've seen a frightening number of nasty injuries where people have landed with bare hands on the ice and been cut by a skate blade running into their fingers. Other than that, try not to hang onto the rail or indeed anyone else - if you fall holding someone else then you'll pull them down as well, and vice versa, if they go down then so will you. Watch out for the idiot yobbo lads showing off in their hockey skates.

Above all - have FUN!!

hold the guardrail VERY TIGHTLY, watch out for the kid that knows how to skate and takes great pleasure in attempting to knock you over by skating round you.

that and the skating rink bar is safer

probably back by now

Forget the advice above.........leave the safety of the hand rails and get out in the open. Holding onto things makes you stiffen your body, thats bad as you need to stay loose and move your weight around to keep the best balance.

Have fun, but don't try doing the tricks you've seen the celebs do on tv :D

Ice Skating is brilliant :) Advice? Wear multiple pairs of socks!

If youre learning, dont get into the habit of using your only good foot, which will end up you looking like a dog trying to bury its doo-doo...hehe

I've been twice, went once for my wifes 22nd birthday some 6 years ago, and spent the night scratching at the ice with one foot (ala the doggy situation) to get around, and most of it falling over.

Went again last year, and my neices friend (the same one with the power risers actually), 'taught' me how to skate, dont use your foot to push backwards to propel yourself....As you move your foot backwards, turn it to more of a 45 degree angle (ie tow pointing outwards), and gently push to the side....Once you realise it's the motion that keeps you going, it becomes easier to learn IYSWIM.

We went once again last year and I didnt fall over once. After a 10 mins steadying myself on the ice I got more confidence, and was skating round the middle almost.

Wear gloves as has been said, and if you're prone to geting hot and sweaty with the minimal of movement :p like me, then dont expect to be freezing all night, althogh it's cold, you'll get warm very quickly once you get moving...Keep some layers by the side though to keep you warm once you stop.

I love Ice Skating, especially when it isnt too busy.

Well went last night, had great fun, i had forgotten how much fun it was, well next time (and there wi.l be a next time) we are going to go to a family night where everyone has to be accompanied by an adult, there were lots of very good kids and they were nice and kept out of our way, my friend fell over and probably one of the smallest on the rink came over and asked if she was ok. need extra socks next time.
dont ache as bad as i thought i would this morning.
