Hi,

Lookign for advice on a lens choice.

I'm after a wide zoom to replace the stock lens that came with my 350D. Typically something in the 18-50 range.

I'm toying with the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC or a second hand 17-40 Canon L. The Canon is stretching my budget. ideally looking at around the £300 tops.

I'd want a versatile lens for all round use.

Those are just the two i've been thinking of. I know the Canon is the superior lens but any experiences of the Sigma or can you suggest any worthy alternatives?

edit: also considering Sigma 17-70...

cheers,

Rich

I have just got the Sigma 18-50 EX DC (2nd Hand) and I must admit I am thrilled with it.
Sits on my 400D nicely and so far I am impressed with it, not tried the 17-40 L so can't compare.
Very happy with the sigma:thumbs:

I have use the 17-70 for a year now and really impressed with image quality and the lens feels solid and not palsticy.

The only downside is no fixed aperture since it ranges from 2.8-4.5

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS Lens is only £159.99 from Jessops and was rated very well in the mags with the new IS being used in it. Unfortunately, it'll only work on the cropped bodies but you can then get the Canon 55-250 IS to compliment it which got brilliant reviews and can be had at £199.99 from the local shops.

I just got the Sigma F2.8 and is giving me great results but it was a fair whack more with price. I do find it restricting only going to 50mm for my type of photography so it may be worth looking at something with a little more reach if you need such? :)

I was looking at the 17-40 Canon L recently also but found quite a lot of negative reviews about it, despite being 'L' glass. But then the reviews aren't always right!

Check out here if it helps: http://lens-reviews.com

I recently got the 18-55mmIS for my 400d, much better than non IS kit. I got it from camerabox for £99. I also have the 55-250mmIS too, its fab!

hi all. Thanks for0the advice. I went for the 17-70 in the end. Looks like it delivers good bang for the buck!
