Recently been looking around for a british photography forum to find some info on various DSLR's, before I purchase one. Hi, I'm Josh, 16 from Huddersfield, W-Yorkshire.

Always been into digital photography (nothing too technical) well until I managed to get sand in the shutter of my Samsung NV10 whilst on holiday in Mexico, so not been able to shoot recently and resorted to the 5MP cam on my phone which isn't great. So I've been working plenty recently and I am saving up for DSLR, absolute maximum is £600. I really like the look of the Nikon D60, my dad forked out a bit of cash for a D80 I think to photography bathrooms he's fitted and just for a hobby kind of thing and I had been playing around with that, first impressions looks rather complex but looks sweet. Essentially the camera will be used for sports (mainly extreme sports, motocross, mountain-biking, bmxing) but also for landscape/scenery/urban photography but as I've enrolled in a Photography course at college it could come in use for anything. I'm looking to buy it from Jessops in the hope we'll get some kind of discount as we've purchased all our cameras from there.

Any help much appreciated from anyone? :)

Hi Joshua, welcome. :) My head tells me to tell you to go with the Nikon as you'll, possibly, be able to share lenses...etc. with your dad.
My heart says a Canon 40D - 'cause it's what I've got! You mention sports photography - the 6.5 frames per second on the 40D might come in handy at some point. (Although might be a little above your max budget). There's always the 450.....
Ah heck, I spent months trying to make my mind up. At the end of the day, they all have their pros and cons. Have a play with everything that falls into your budget and see what 'fits'. Enjoy! ;)

Hi Josh, so it looks like you will be on "the dark side" as they say on this forum and be a Nikonite, either way welcome to the forum

I think I'm opting for something between the D60 or the D80. Definitely not the D40 the lack of megapixels would hold me back in College when it comes to printing onto A3, and anything bigger. Prob opting for the D60 it's a little cheaper, and the body of D80 is £500. Can anyone advice me on some lenses which would be good for me to start off, initally the camera will be used for sports, landscapes, music events. I can buy more specific lenses later on when I get use to the camera. Lenses seem to be awfully confusingg.

Hi & Welcome:D
I'll leave the technical bit to the more knowlegable. You should find plenty of help here!

Hello and Welcome
I have just sold my D80 its not that complicated.
A note to be aware of, the D40[x] and D60 do not have built in focus motors so you will have to use AFS or AFI lenses for Autofocus the others [D and G lenses] will only manual focus like AIS lenses.
You could try and get different lenses than your Dad then you will have a bigger choice to share between you.
