I'm in Medulin..near Pula, Croatia ..it's on the Venetian Sea...and this morning..7.30am I was on the hotel room balcony and saw,for the first time, a European Turtle Dove fly onto the branch of a tree in the grounds only 15m away. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a photo in the time we're here as it probably lives locally. They are very timid, wary and for good reason. Being shot. They are on the Red List.

This move is beyond my comprehension. I feel anger towards those who thought lifting the ban was acceptable. Why have they done it ? Which powerful lobby has caused this about-turn ? Back-room deals in the EU? Who has benefited ? Probably not financially but politically.

"The EU will allow hunters to shoot 132,000 birds across Spain, France and Italy after the threatened bird enjoyed a population boom in western Europe because of a hunting ban that came into effect in 2021. Turtle doves will be allowed to be shot for sport again across Europe, as the EU lifts a ban on hunting that was credited with the species’ tentative recovery ".

Malta is the worst offender re this bird and quails, amongst others. Migrating birds stop over on Malta and the local islands travelling from Africa having been there during Europe's cold winter . I've been aware of what goes on there for sometime so, when my wife suggested it as a holiday destination not long ago, it was a firm..no. It's a minority ,of course, who do the shooting but a poll,in 2015 , showed that 50.4% of those who voted said ' Yes' to it continuing on the grounds of that old favourite.....tradition. More voted against it but, nevertheless, 50.4% is a sizeable number. Many do oppose it ..to no avail it seems and populist politicians use it to attract votes. I also read that when the police are informed of ongoing shooting they do nothing.

Here's an article on it with a photo of the European Turtle Dove.

It is a big problem across islands in the Med' incuding Cyprus, Malta and the Greek islands. Basically it is a massacre of any passing birds on migration no matter how large or small. Also parts of South America were notorious for organising dove shoots where the paying 'sportsmen' were guaranteed to shoot over a thousand each day.
