So I just watched this video

And thought that's and interesting technique and wonder if it really does work?

Does anyone have experience or has used it?
Cheers

P.S I don't see a section for astro photography.

Hi,
new here and this is my first post. I watched this video. Found it interesting but I don't really see how you could get anything really good from it. But I have an alternative. Last year I attended a very interesting talk given by a chap called Graham Relf who is a retired programmer and keen photographer. He's developed some software which enables you to take quite stunning images of the stars. Here's, briefly, how it works. Set your camera to manual, set the ISO as high as your camera permits, stick the camera on a tripod and point it at the sky. Set the shutter speed to 10 seconds and use the interval timer function to take upwards of 250 exposures. Let it run while you have a glass of wine. Then using his software which is a free download you import each image into the same file. What the software does is to warp each image so that a number of stars eg 20 or so map onto each other. What this does is counter the earth's rotation. Since you are superimposing one image on top of the next then random noise caused by the long exposure cancels out. What you end up with is something like a 40 minute (250 x 10 sec) exposure. It takes a bit of practice with the software but the results can be sensational. First time I tried it I noticed a little fuzzy area which when I zoomed in was a spiral galaxy Andomeda.

Obviously you need to have a very dark sky otherwise even the slight glow from a nearby town wrecks things. I'm lucky, I live in the wilds of Northumberland.

Since this is my first post I'm not allowed to send a link to his website but if you Google Graham Relf you should find it easy enough. Maybe this will get through without upsetting the mods - grelf dot net. Lots of detail on how to use his software are here.

Hope this helps

Good luck,

Steve
