ETTL in modes

Hi - I'm teaching myself flash and I've just got a 580EX II to use with my Canon 30D, both on and off camera. The manual says you can use ETTL in M, TV, P and AV, but I can't seem to get the speedlite to use it in these modes. It works fine in auto.

The speedlite comes up with E, and a quick google suggests the 30D isn't compatible with E mode. Any idea?

I think you need to turn 'ETTL' back on in the 'custom functions'
