You lot probs get this quite a lot but i'd like to know what most people consider essentials.
At the moment my kit consists of:-
Nikon D40
18-55mm Kit lens
Nikkor HC 28mm wideangle f/3.5
Velbon D-700 tripod
Centon camera bag.

What would you suggest for soon purchases?

Thanks
Dean

A UV filter to protect the front element of your lenses would be a good starting point if you don't already own any.
I've also just noticed that you don't own a flash - I'd definitely make this a soon purchase, makes the world of difference to shots if used correctly & Nikon flash technology is amazing!!
It really depends on what you're shooting exactly - landscapes I'd recommend a set of ND grad filters & a remote release, etc.
Other styles would require different equipment but at the end of the day all you really need is your camera & a good eye

A kit lens covers the most used focal lengths. Where you go from there depends on what you like taking pictures of and how much you want to spend :)

You have got the essentials already. Plenty of good ideas for add ons above ^.

Need to know what you are shooting to suggest more options.

As above really - depends what you are planning on taking photographs of. I went mad for a flash, which my other half bought me for my birthday last year and I've used it once :$

Wish list should include a decent zoom lens if you into sports. I got a couple of 70-300mm that i use all the time.

First buy. A couple of spare batteries. Absolutely essential.
