Hi everyone

Feel bad coming on with a question when I am more of a lurker really but having a problem I have no idea how to sort so would be very grateful of any help.

I recently started using CS4 and it has been fine for the first few weeks but it keeps coming up with something saying 'cant do such and such because of error' (or something along those lines - now I am trying to make it come up to tell you exact wording I cant!) Its not on a certain thing either - it can be trying to clone, going to auto adjust something and also trying to add filters (mainly silver efex pro) etc. It is driving me mad and I find the only way to be able to do something is to come out of cs4 completely and then have to open it all up again.

One other thing is sometimes you try and open silver efex and it brings up a new layer and then it just disappears before efex opens up.

Many thanks in advance

Diagnosis is difficult without specific error reports. Does CS4 crash & close?

nope you just have to click ok on the error box and then trying to do same thing again brings up same box

Have you looked on the Adobe website?

Was it installed from a disc or download from Adobe, or from a third party that could have changed the program to get around activation etc? (Not accusing you of anything, just ruling it out)

installed from a disc (bought from amazon)
just editing to add it was new and seller was amazon so it should be ok (I hope!)

Cool, I'd certainly try the support forums on Adobe then.

I get the message sometimes that I'm out of memory. Even though I'm on 4gb of ram with 70% allocated to PS CS4, a silly big hard drive (using as the scratch disk) it still throws a wobbly after I've edited a number of photos. I normally find exiting the program and restarting every so often helps a lot....

Most likely problems in order:

1. Your video card is unsupported - check the compatibility list and get a new one if necessary.
2. You are running with an old video card driver - update it.
3. You have CS4 running in a GPU mode not supported by your video card (in Preferences). Disable OpenGL mode.
4. You didn't install all the latest patches for CS4 - update it.
5. You don't have enough RAM or free disk space on your designated Scratch Disk (in Preferences) - check both and resolve as necessary.
