Hi everyone.

Has anyone experienced this? I have experienced it, and it's massively annoying.
I still believe it's a software glitch more than a mechanical thing, but I would like to get more opinions on board.

How very odd

Looks like he resolved the issue i.e. get the mechanical shutter replaced by Canon (I surmise FoC under warranty?) but is continuing to kick the can down the road

PS reading the PoTN thread......if the issue was firmware and commonplace all users would be clamouring for it to be fixed. However, empirically the fault is more likely to be mechanical but 'controlled' by the settings & firmware. The question unanswered is why not let Canon look at it and replace the shutter ???

Thanks for your input. Sure, there is always the obvious option to go fix it at any Canon repair center.
But because my camera is not under warranty, I would also as surely be looking at a major expense.

So I was kind of trying to figure out if anything else could be done before biting the bullet. I think it's rather unacceptable to experience this kind of problem with a pro camera that costs around 3500 USD. The shutter has not even reached 10% of its alleged maximum actuation.

Nothing wrong with asking on public fora for others insights & experiences......and as illustrated by the replies on PoTN there are some other R5 users who have seen the issue.

PoTN has its origins in Canon users so potentially has more R5 users than many other fora, the 'fact'(?) that a few others have seen it does not make it a common problem. So, unless enough R5 users have sent their R5 off for repair the case is moot as to the root cause.

I have no idea how long the R5 has been out? Has your warranty run out or is a Grey Market one in your country, if the latter what are your consumer rights for a remedy with the supplier?

In regard to shutter life, it has always been my understanding that the term was(in reality is!) Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) i.e. a shutter could fail (note ~ fail not show degradation) anywhen from out of the box to possibly x2 or more of the stated figure. The statistical & lab life tests of the shutter will yield the MTBF = the majority of users will see the stated figure! The published figure is not a "maximum life"

The camera has been out a while, Canon is talking about launching the MKII early next year, so that settles it I guess:)

As I wrote, the camera is no longer under warranty. I bought it second-hand.
Regretfully, there are no consumer rights as such in this part of the world, as in many others.

Cool about the theoretical 'maximum life' but would you be happy to get 10% of that, as I mentioned?
I would not for sure. The 5D mkIII and 5D mkIV I had were much better performers in those regards.

Unfortunately things don't always last as long as they should. An item is only as good as it's weakest component. A $10,000 sound system can fail because of a 5c resistor failing.

I have had a number of Canon cameras and never had an issue with any of them. I currently have a R5 as do 1000's of others who have never had an problem.

Sometimes you just get a dud, unfortunate, but a fact of life.

One thing that I am certain of though is that replacing the shutter mechanism will be cheaper than a new R5mkii

yes, it will be cheaper!

Just really not sure If I want to go the Canon route again for the next camera. I kind of feel their QC has gone down since they joined to the mirrorless bandwagon.
Conversely, their prices have gone way up. Look at the RF lenses, prices are just through the roof.

Up to you but Nikon's fail, Fuji's fail, Sony's fail.

You're here complaining about Canon and yet you haven't even bothered to speak to them about the problem from what I can determine.
