Hi all, just a random thought going on inside my brain.

I am a Landscape Tog but some landscapes show more details in the skies and water, is this a combination of hdr or the use of filters ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lawrie,

Its most likely the use of grad filters to balance the exposure between land and sky. Perhaps an example of one of yours that you think could be improved with would help us to advise further.

I'm not a huge fan of HDR but I used it the other day for a shot that I'm near certain would simply not have been possible thorugh any other means. Shot is below. The lighthouse had a floodlight aimed at it on the right hand side which made it very bright in an otherwise near completely dark scene. I ended up take three exposures and I've got a feeling that the the one used to get the lighthouse detail in was a good 4-5 stops lower than the other exposures.

In daylight and with a less awkward subject, I like to use soft and hard grads.

Great shot Graham, it's got a sort of model look to it. Not normally a fan of HDR but I do like that one.
