Hey guys after some advice. Have been looking at getting back into photography and am considering a NIKON d700 with 2 lenses. Also looking at a macro lens.

Main subjects will be macro with some action shots as I do a bit of photography for the local footie club.

Is this a good choice of camera and any recommendations on the lenses.

For the Canon boys I would consider a Canon equivalent as I have owned both.

Thanks in advance
Oh and budget is around 2-2.5k

Perhaps a 7D or 1D3 given your subjects? I quite like the 100mm macro on 40D, hate it on 1Ds (far too wide).
Footie does require LOOOONG lenses, and Full frame would be the wrong way. 7D is crop, and would be OK with something like 200/2.8 300/4 given it is only for a local club. D700 would need more like 400mm++. Nikon doesn't quite have the set of affordable pro lenses. I would call D700 more of a press / wedding camera.

Landscapes - 5D mkII owns that genre (D3X / 1Ds3 are too expensive for the little extra they offer).

Thank you for the response, going to go and see if i can have a look at some cameras in the shops today, have a hold and see what they are like :)

Nikon's AF 60mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor is very good as is the 105mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (I just bought a 2nd hand 60mm for "not very much" - prices of 2nd hand kit are pretty stable - with macro photography there's not much to be gained by having the latest lenses, as for this sort of thing I tend to manually focus anyway...).

The other lens you'd be looking at for sports would be the 70-200 f/2.8 as a minimum requirement: it depends on your budget as to what level to aspire to. Slower/longer (and third-party) lenses are available but you might struggle with low-light, obviously.

The D700 is only bettered by a D3 or D3s - and by the time you've added a grip (they were doing an offer that added a free grip somewhere...anyone?) the RRP isn't much different TBH...
2nd hand D3 bodies are around the £2k mark for a minty example.

Maybe a 7D, used 100-400mmL for the footie and a MPE-65 for extreme macro!

Cheers for the replies, another quick question, for the macro shots, is it worth getting the ring flash set up and if you get the ring flash do you also need another flash aswell (ie a SB900) or is the ring flash ok on its own.

I'm also considering dropping down a level and using the savings to put towards a ring flash / flash gun as i think this would be more beneficial than the extra money on the camera.
