EDIT: All scrapped. The shakes (from steroid treatment, they think) is getting a wee bit much. Will need to invest in some VR glass to compensate 'shaken not stirred' feature in my hands. Hehe, dont you just love being walking pharmancy.

Appreciate the comments though guys.

Might want to consider a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 as an alternative to the 18-70. I wanted a replacement to my 18-55 a while ago, and narrowed the choice down to these two. I went with the Sigma in the end and have had no regrets - it's a great lens.

WRT option set 1 ~ why do you need a pretty gosh darn nice tripod / head combo to mount a flash?

I would go along the lines of option set 1, but dump the nice tripod, replace it with something far lower end, more compact & lighter then use the extra funds to get an SB-800, not 600. Then you can fire the 800 on-camera and the 600 off. And the 800 is a real nice flash in general.

Unless I'm missing something, you'd still only have a "2 point" strobe system with a second SB-600 ~ as the onboard flash, when set to commander, does that & only that - sure, some of the onboard strobe ends up in the image, but it's a minimal amount that you can't control.
You can do the same thing with a second SB-800, but you can also, should you wish, have the 800 fire both a commander burst for the 600 and strobe as normal itself. Then you get a two point system with on-camera & off camera flash, something you can't do with two 600's. And as previously mentioned, despite reading in most places that the 800 isn't worth it over the 600 in terms of features vs. extra cost, I've really, really liked the 800 whenever I use it (my own strobe is a 600).

This is all a moot point if you don't actually think you'll use two strobes that often, as then you are better off going for the most budget route.
