Still dithering over committing to an A3 printer so have been looking at a new A4 instead. The Epson R800 looks good to me and I can get one for around 200 quid. Anyone out there got one and can give me feedback on its performance?

Thanks

If you mean the Stylus Photo R800, I have had one for a couple of years and can highly recommend it for quality. Gives much better results with genuine Epson paper. It does get through the cartridges pretty quick and they're bleedin' expensive! About £80 for a complete set

Im with Paul on this:thumbs:..excellent results..but so darned thirsty..

Don't buy Epson cartridges unless you're silly rich or have a specific need. I have always used aftermarket carts at about £10 a set and get superb results.

It won all the awards for ages in the magazines for being the best by far but as mentioned, was always expensive to run, and the reviews did all say that Epson ink and paper was needed to get the best from it...

:agree: totally. Never had any problems with aftermarket inks and would probably only use Epson inks if I can build it into the cost to the client without upsetting them.

Thanks for that everyone! I must admit the cost of the inks made me gulp. I don't mind the price of Epson paper but as the pics are only for my personal enjoyment (and some friends I can bully into having one!) I could go with compatible cartridges.

Any suggestions for a less thirsty printer! Without compromising too much on the quality. I may use it primarily for black and white as I already have an Epson RX 425 that I can use for colour - or vice versa.

I'm also contemplating this printer (currently have a R300 but its on its way out I think)., Just wondering which brand of 3rd party inks people use.

Btw.. look on eBay.. i've seen a few of these sell for around £150 in the last few weeks.

I have an (now ageing) Epson r200 which is really cheap to run on compatible inks and has so far been pretty faultless.
Have to say with the low cost and good quality offered by online print companies I would never contemplate printing more than the occasional one off at home. If you need print fast for commercial use then yes.

Thanks Robert, but cos I live in southern Spain with a postal service that delivers twice a week (if we're lucky), and DHL and the like would rather leave stuff at the local petrol station for us to collect later, I'd rather just use external printing as a last resort. Which is why originally I was thinking about the A3 printer. Inks I can get sent out quite cheaply, and paper is doable here too (although I'm not sure about bigger than A4, hence the change of mind over the bigger printer, so I'll probably go the R800 route.

For my R800 I use a Fotospeed InkFlow system, large bottles outside the printer, £90 for startup kit, heads, tubes etc. I find it BRILL! £80 for set of replacement 100ml bottles.

The R800 is capable of giving good results.

However, it uses huge amounts of ink when cleaning the print heads. So avoid doing that if you can. ( I find it mind-boggling that a printer uses INK to clean itself - but at the price Epson are charging for ink perhaps its not such a surprise ....)

I've read that it is a good idea to do a colour print with an Epson inkjet printer every so often just to keep the jets clean - especially if haven't used it for a while.

If the print heads get blocked you can clean them, (but see above) but if it takes six cleaning cycles and you still don't get good results, you might as well buy a new printer! I was told this by Epson themselves. You can buy a "reconditioned" R800 fom Epson for about £100 (from memory), but it comes without ink cartridges.

Using 3rd party cartridges will save money but you might to have get a profile for the new set-up/combination.

Jerry you can buy cleaning cartridges for it qiite cheaply if it's becoming a problem.

Steep,

Yes, I've seen them advertised. One website I looked at said that before using them you have to take out all your ink cartridges and then discard them !!!!! It all seems to be a conspiracy to make us buy more ink.

Do they work? Do you need one for each colour or can you use the same one for each colour consecutively?
