1st ill just explain I've always avoided using profiles as I've no idea what to do, so with canon canon printer I just plugged it in and got very good prints as to what was on screen. Today I bought an epson and when I print an image and compair it to the same canon print I can see a number of differences
1- in the shadow areas it seems quite grainy
2- very much over saturated
3- i am getting a purple cast in images that should be red ( 2 sunset images I compaired)
 
Forgot to add the paper is illford smooth pearl
 
Another couple or test prints shows terrible grain/noise in another print, unusable
 
Not alot with the grain problem, with regards to the colour I downloaded a profile and it's made it 10 times worse, my little girl with light red hair now has purple hair when I printed the image

ok a little update....i have had no joy with profiles and in fact it made the problem worse,im getting best results just through the printer driver BUT i have found a test page on line which is an image of 9 different coloureed spools of thread and when i print it, all colours match(maybe a little over saturated,i could live with it) apart from the red thread and blue thread...the problem is as follows
on screen the thread is royal blue but on my print it is quite a dark purple
on screen the thread is raspberry red but on print its postbox red
so out of the 9 colours just 2 are off,i have tried both epson standard and epson vivid which made little difference.

so i feel im nearly there but how can i sort out just these 2 colours
 
another update,thought i was getting somewhere and printed some of the kids and dog,skin tones terrible as in the kids are ill looking also the dog that is fawn now looks white,I reackon i spent £60 in the last 24hrs trying to sort this on ink and paper, why ohh why didnt i stick to canon!!(plug and play)
does anyone know how i would stand for a refund??
 
Go back to the supplier and say that the printer does not perform in the way it is advertised. Explain the problems and see if they can find the solution. If not, they they should arrange a refund under the guarantee terms. If you have problems, call the Trading Standards office.

Having said al that, I expect it is something you are not doing correctly as I understand that many of these printers are considered to be first class. You could always call Canon.
 
What software are you printing from?

Also check the driver settings with the printer. If you are using "Printer manages Colour" then you have some options. Check that the "Vivid option is not enabled. I think it is by default so that may be causing the problem. Also under the advanced tab there are control's that enable you adjust the levels of each colour, that may help.
 
stumac, I have the same printer and the same problem with Ilford Gallerie paper. There is some incompatibility between the 1400s' inks and that particular papers coating.

I've used other papers quite successfully but it's a shame because I really like Ilfords papers.
 
I've tried everything apart from another paper, so I suppose I should try that. Anyone suggest a good pearl type paper
 
I should mention that I'm using Epsons own semi gloss photo paper with good results.
 
order some epson semi gloss today so fingers crossed
 
Ok so the epson paper has sorted out the problem, I was surprised just how much if an improvement the make if the paper made..... I never realised that this printer cant print on fine art paper or the likes and was just wondering has anyone ever took a chance and tried it??
 
ilford smooth pearl is not fine art paper - it has the same type of surface as the semi-gloss does
 
I know it's not fine art but I would of liked to use some with this printer, I use fine art with the a4 canon I have but a3 would have been nice
 
Daft question but if you have some A4 have you tried it in the 1400?
 
I'm tempted to but I'm told the problem is the fibres on fine art paper will catch and cause problems on the roller, don't know if there's any proof in this or if it's epsons way to make you want to buy a more expensive printer

nothing to stop you using art rag papers with your printer. the fibre based papers are made for pigment ink but should work with dye.
