Epson r1400 printer help!!

I am loosing the will to live, my printer is leaving black ink trail marks on the end of prints.
The 1st 99% of the printing goes great but the last maybe 10mm of the print is smeared with black ink. I have tried every cleaning method I know of but nothing helps. It does it with every paper size .

Anyone any ideas please?
 
1. Is your paper curled at the ends
2. Is the paper being supported as it comes out of the printer.
3. what paper type/ weight/thickness are you using.
4. With most printers you can alter the platen gap - space between paper and print heads to overcome a similar problem but being an ex1400 owner I don't think you can do it on this printer.
5. Are they anything like this

6. Are you feeding from the sheet feed at the back and have you tried the front feed if it has one??

Has the excess ink absorbent pad become saturated? On some printers you can change it like a cartridge, on others it is a service job.
 
If the base absorption pads are full then it is an expensive Epson service job and probably cheaper to buy a new printer....however I would not think if this is the case that it would cause ink marks on the printed paper The 1400 does not have a maintenance cart to absorb excess ink or overspill ink from borderless printing.....you have to fit a waste ink tank

sounds like the paper is hitting the print heads. does it happen only on borderless prints?

if you run a print head alignment and check do you get a smear or the correct test print done
 
Thanks everyone for your detailed and helpful replies, I put some blotting paper on the ink pad and lifted ALOT of ink and it seems to have cured the problem.
 
You may have caused this problem through borderless printing as there is a certain amount of overspill which is absorbed by the pads.
I use to to this with my 1400 but since buying a 3880 at £950 have stopped doing borderless printing completely

Hi Dave,

Can I just correct your post on a couple of bits as I'm not sure if you meant the opposite but got things mixed up. The borderless waste pads cannot be redirected to an external waste ink tank nor can the existing contents of the main waste ink pads. However any new waste ink generated for the main waste ink pads can be redirected out.

So, to recap..

1. The platen waste pad (the bit under the printhead path) can be "Emptied" using something like a tampon or other highly absorbent material to draw off the contents of the pads there. Looks like @stumac managed that which is all good :)

2. The main waste ink pads can't be "emptied" (although excess past capacity could be syringed out) but any new waste ink can be redirected to an external waste ink system like a Printer Potty, or similar.

In both instance though, if the waste ink counter(s) are at maximum then the waste counter will need to be reset to clear the "Service required" error. Depending on your computer operating system that could be a free IPR utility released by Epson America, a "leaked" AdjProg service utility or the iWIC/WICReset pay-per-reset system which requires a key code for each reset.

Hope that clarifies in case anyone was scratching their head...
