I saw that, and I also saw an announcement that they are definitely not discontinuing the high end scanners. Very odd.

... and this is an article saying the opposite: https://petapixel.com/2025/02/05/ep...cd-film-scanners-are-approaching-end-of-life/ . Epson still has the V850 listed on its web site, but showing as out of stock.

I was just reading the Petapixel story

There is some nuance

Epson flatly denies the claim that these products are approaching “end of life.”

“[The the V850 and 13000XL] products are not ‘end of life’ units and are highly recommended for film scanning,” an Epson representative tells PetaPixel.

It is possible that Epson USA, with whom PetaPixel directly communicates, is operating differently than Epson UK and the latter is winding down sales of these CCD photo scanners. Epson claims photographers in North America, however, have nothing to worry about.

Currys have stock for the V850 with free del, well in my area......erm the retail price @ £959 is a lot for a scanner and I wouldn't pay it as you could have a lot of film scanned say by filmdev for that price. For scanning docs (best B/W) you could use a S/H e.g. Epson 4180 and works with win 11.

For some of us Brian it is a hobby to do it ourselves and it keeps quality control 'in house' - cost isnt the option otherwise we would all shoot digital which is free once the camera is purchased.

When you look at the Nikon Coolscans and Noritsu/Fuji Scanners £1k isn't a lot.

There are those that use a flatbed for large format scanning.

..but I thought fishyfish has used a better scanner for film? and a V850 is a jack of all trades and if anyone is interested would scan a photo on my cheap Epson 4180 to show if acceptable...I don't use it much as I would scan a photo and film on my V750.
AAMOI I have posted (years ago) the difference between a 4180 and V750 for med format, and I'm not suggesting buy a 4180 as there are better S/H ones and just bought the 4180 at the bootie for about £7 just to see what the results were like and mainly for scanning docs.
Of course I understand if into 6X4 the V850 would be useful and as a hobby costs are not important.

Hi Brian, these were scanned using a V850:

I used an Epson Perfection 3170 before the V850; the resolution was lower and the scans weren't as good.

I used a better scanning film holder in the V850 which was far better than the generic Epson Holder. It is critical to get the height of the holder correct for best results.

Scanning a neg with the V750 from the RB67 180mm lens it's so sharp the hair came out like wire when not using a diffuser which I'd normally would do. :$

Have you sandwiched this neg with glass or had it directly on the scanner bed as it has 'newton rings' visible.

H'mm I can't see them and the neg was in the scanner holder. If any defect it could be because I did my own dev in the past and could be something like drying marks? When I find the neg (taken about 35-40 years ago) I'll look at it with a lupe and if the epson 4180 has a 6X7 holder will scan to see the difference.

Hi Brian, you can see them on the left hand side of the image by the fold in the backdrop Infront of face then also in right and side above head. I can see them on my monitor & phone so not a display issue at my end.

Oh well my excuse is a bit of something on the curtain o_O ;)

Just a quick scan using the 4180 (excuse the spots)..it can do 6X7 and think the picture is quite acceptable for a bootie scanner for £7. I must have used photoshop to remove lines on the face for the v750 picture.

I don't think it's Newton's rings you're seeing - they'd be wider, more curvy and less regular. I think it's just how a rhythm in the weave of the fabric has rendered, out of focus ...
