I've had an Epson 1400 for a couple of years now after upgrading from an old HP printer. I quickly went for a CIS system as I print a lot, initially using one from Ink Express (I think) then switching to a Fotospeed system. I like Ilford papers but have tried many other brands including Fotospeed's own.
Matt printing is near perfect. POAH did me some profiles which are spot on (thanks again Ross) and I've never had problems no matter what brand the paper (Ilford, Fotospeed, Hahnemuhle...).
Gloss or silk has proved a nightmare. Anything black has a cast, anything in dark shadow looks awful and loses all detail. I've tried POAH's profiles, Fotospeeds profiles, canned profiles from Epson, random profiles from the web, anything. Nothing has worked.
So last week I buy some cheapo Epson glossy paper on a whim, stick it through with the standard Epson glossy profile - perfect! Deep blacks, great shadows, colours spot on. No fiddling needed, just spot on.
I've no idea why the paper makes such a difference - Ilford blamed Fotospeed, Fotospeed blamed Epson - but on the off chance somebody is in my position with a 1400, my advice is to just try Epson brand paper. For some reason it works when others just don't.
Now if only I could get decent black and whites...
