WEEK 1

Well this seems like a good idea and here is my choice for this weeks photograph

2101_01_06-8.jpg

It's already been shown on the site, but I love the impressionistic quality of this image, and the fact that it arose from a mistake

It was a 30 second exposure, but I hadn't been watching the tide closely enough and where I placed the tripod was exactly where the tide was going to come in quickly and further up than I had expected. This made me lift the tripod and pull the camera back, I thought the shot would be ruined but it turned out to be my favourite from the day

Link to other shots from the day

Hi Stephen,

I really do like that - mistake or not
A very calm and peaceful image with a sort of misty feel - "impressionistic" is probably a perfect description for it.

Although it's very minimal, it does draw me in and I like the splash of pink and the faint pier on the right.

I'm really drawn to this image. I like the minimalism and the almost abstract quality. As Sarah mentioned the contrast of the pink really makes it.

Hi Stephen,

Well done on a cracking shot there. I have to agree with you about the impressionistic quality!

Isn't it fantastic when the 'mistake' photos come out so brilliant? Certainly puts a smile on my face when I have a booboo photo that comes out great or is something I can work with.

I've been caught out twice by the incoming tide before, once at Blackpool and the other in Morecambe Bay. It is quite a scary feeling when the water rises so fast and one needs to make a quick exit.

I agree with the others about the pink and white on the right, it does add to the image. I think if the image had all been blue it would have looked dull and flat, so it definitely lifts the photo.

I have had a quick peek at the other photos from the day and have to agree this one is the better of the pics, although you got some great photos on the day.

Well done and I look forward to seeing the other images your produce for this project.

Good Luck

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks for all the comments people :) as always, encouraging

I love happenstance, the thrill of the unexpected and am using film a bit more now to encourage that

Week 2

flooded10.jpg

This is just down the road from where I work and is a shot of the Wiske on its way to the Swale, but being about 10x wider than normal

Hi Stephen, another enchanting image that really draws me in.
On various levels this pic really shouldn't work, but it does
It has a sort of old world feel to it - like a bygone age.

coming from the flats of the east of england, i'm used to open views that go on forever, so this does it for me, the converging telephone lines good coming from the corners like that .. but them being lost bright cloud patch..does spoil it slightly...

well done stephen..

I know what you mean about it shouldn't work, that was one of the reasons I posted it :)

Week 3

york27.jpg

Visit to York today and this barge has been sitting there for a while, never shows much change or movement

Hiya Stephen,

I would love such a simple style of life.

In your image, I like the reflection, but would have preferred to see more of the trees above the horrizon. Also think that the boat is a tad OOF, and the WB a bit out.

I think the image would have benefited from a crop if you couldn't get more or the trees on the horizon, just to balance the image.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Did you try it in portrait.

I'd like to see the full trees and reflections, even if they aren't the subject matter.

ND filter for a longer exposure.

Cheers.
