EOS30D 9 near focus confirm

Hi all

I know this is a daft question that you probably all know the answer to, but I don't :bonk: and if do I've forgotten : so here goes:
I have an EOS30D and in the viewfinder next to the focus confirm light it displays 9 and never seems to change :shrug: what does this mean

How many shots remaining for the burst or if there's not much space left on the card how many before it's full.
