Hello everyone,

I bought my wife a Canon EOS 300v camera outfit when we got married a few years ago and last month I bought her a D40x to replace it. I didn't go down the Canon route with her new camera or mine because I preferred the Nikon ones. BUT the zoom lens I bought her is still in the cupboard and I was wondering if I could re use it for her. The lens in question is a Sigma 70-300 DL macro super. I have seen adapters to fit Nikon lenses on EOD cameras but not the other way round.

My question - Does anyone know where I can get an adapter ring and how much? Will it work in auto (I doubt it on the 40x)? and is it worth doing?

Thanks

Agreed. Not worth doing, even if it's possible, which it probably isn't.

Due to the design of the Canon EOS mount (it is just about the biggest mount in the current 35mm SLR market) it is just about the most adaptable mount around (you can use just about any lens via adaptor on this mount).

On the other hand Nikon has a mount which is much smaller and concequently there is much less options for adaptors. I am not that knowledgable about the Nikon mount, but apart from medium format, I don't think you can get any adaptors for Nikon (maybe screwmount can be used as well).

Not possible.

When Canon went AF in the late 80's, they abandoned the FD lens standard and introduced the EF mount. The EOS system is very shallow - the distance between the rear of a lens and the sensor/film is less than that of any other AF SLR system - and very wide. The circumference of the EOS connector is considerable larger than the Nikon system.

Nikon use the old F mount from back in the film days. Some AF lenses have motors in them - the D40 compatible ones - while some use the body-based AF motor and a physical connection to the lens. When Nikon went AF, they just added to their mount.

The shallowness of the EOS mount means that other lenses, such as Nikon, screw mounts etc, can be mounted on it. The distance between lens and film in a Nikon camera is enough that an adapter ring can be placed between the Nikon lens and the Canon mount, and still achieve infinite focus.

The other way round, however is not possible. There's two issues. The width of the EOS mount is more than the F mount, so it does not physically fit, and the shallow body the EOS system requires isn't available on the Nikon. If you where to move the lens far back enough to focus to infinity, the mirror would hit the lens.

If you see an adapter that claims to do this, it either has optics built in (probably cheap optics) that allow the lens to focus to infinity, or it will not let you focus to infinity.

Basically, it's impossible.

Oh well ! Thanks everyone, looks like I will just have to stick it in the cupboard then. Shame I don't know anyone with a budget canon setup looking for a reasonable zoom lens. Unless there is anyone out there in NW England!

Not forgetting that even if it were possible - combining a Canon lens with a Nikon body would unmake the very fabric of the universe!!

like they say in Ghostbusters - don't cross the streams! ;)

I know. I nearly went down the Canon route but instead bought a D200, nikor 105mm, 18-200 IF ED blah blah and the really nice 50mm prime 1.8f. I wasnt happy with the canon equivalents. As I had bought Nikon I bought my wife a D40x and 18-55 kit zoom plus a sb600 and sb800 between us. I thought that she would make use of the expensive macro lens and zoom till I got hers! Plus I could use the SB600&800 together for more creative lighting! (see my question!)
