Hi,
I'm a danish amateur photographer, mostly shooting football. As we have no sportsphoto forums over here, I think this could be right for me. Having used the Canon EOS 50D for some years I have just bought the 7D - a fantastic camera. However the AF system of course is much different. Does anyone have any advice for setting up the AF for football.

Yesterday I shot at the danish League 2 (third layer). How do I attach a few pictures to this post, in order for someone to judge my AF?

PS! Sorry for my english :)

Welcome to TP. Your English is fine

Your best bet for uploading to the forum is to host your photos on Flickr or Photobucket then share them from there.

Sorry I can't help you with 7D settings for football but I will be keeping an eye on this thread for any 7D football tips.

Paul

Thanks a lot, Paul.
I managed to upload a gallery here at TP:

Used single point AF and AF point extensions. However did not change any other C.Fn III-settings.

if it works then it works.. i wouldnt change anything to conform to what others do.. pic looks good to me and if thats what they all look like then your OK :)

I wouldn’t change that…seems great.

I like the idea about slowing the AF down though Mark…this was a bit of a problem at the weekend for me.

Slowing the AF hunt speed down has really helped with tracking accuracy on both my 1Dmk3 and 7D. Have a play and see how it goes.

Slowing AF sounds the opposite of what you would normally like... But I see the idea Mark, and will try so for the next match.

Am I right, that it is setting C.Fn III-1 which should be adjusted towards SLOW. As a standard setting it is ZERO.

My experience will follow :)

I don't have my camera to hand but that sounds like it. I initially put mine to fast as I wanted that fastest AF (obviously), however if you move off the target for a moment or someone/something else gets in the way of the AF point it will jump off what you really want the focus on. I'm on the 2nd slowest now and for me that works the best.

The thing to remembers is that the AF speed setting governs how quickly the camera acquires a new target, not how quickly it locks on to the original one!

Looks like a really crisp shot me.

Were you using a 70-200mm 2.8 or 400mm prime?

Or something else?

I used the 100-400 Canon, which I find very good for daytime football. We don't have that much floodlight action over here! Besides that, the lights are terribly bad, when it actually does happen. Also use a Sigma 70-200, f2.8, but AF works not that fast with the Canon cameras as I would like. Also I find it not as sharp as the 400.

Thats a really nice image, you could do some serious damage with a 1 series camera and a 300/400mm prime

Well pointed out as this does confuse a lot of people
