EOS 5D - worth buying?

I am looking to upgrade my kit in the coming weeks. I prefer to stick with Canon for lens compatability but I am open to suggestions. The 1D series is a bit over the top for my needs but I want something that is in the pro bracket. The problem is that I am wondering if Canon are likely to be bringing out a new version of the 5D in the near future; I don't want to go out and get one if it then gets superceded shortly afterwards.

So the question is - does anyone have inside info on Canon's plans regarding the 5D or if there is a new equivalent in the pipeline I should wait for?

It is strongly rumoured that there will be a 5D replacement (probably a 5D MkII) coming out in Q1 of 2008. I'd wait and see if there's an announcement in January if I were you.
 
The question must be. How much can they improve the 5D, and would the improvements be worth the price rise. I have always believed that if you want to upgrade and you can afford it, then go for it. The 5D is a great camera, and can be had for a reasonable price now.

I couldn't agree more.

The new 5D will undoubtedly get a larger screen, live view, and sensor cleaning. beyond that just the odd tweak or two - possibly a few more pixels, but it's likely to be £2K or more which makes the current 5D look like a bargain at the moment.

Just be aware that a full frame sensor will mercilessly show up any shortcomings in your lenses so only the best glass will do.

Very true. I found that out the hard way. I am just recovering from open wallet surgery.

With these "improvements" there will more than likely be toothing problems whether they are real, significant or otherwise.(maybe just one or two firmware updates at best?)

I am in exactly your position and because of all these points raised above I can see us buying a 5D when the next model launches.

When it launches and there are REAL significant improvements - by all means - the new model it will be.

If it turns out to be a 20D/30D type of new model upgrade it will be the "OLD" 5D for me.(And at an even better price.)

Let us know which way you go!

Good advice all - thanks for that. I am inclined to think it's worth getting the existing D5 and trading in later if it's worthwhile. Better to save cash now and spend it on good lenses I think. Anyway thanks. I was swaying to a Nikon 2Dx but I'm really not sure about their selection of lenses
 
I bought my 5D just before Christmas, and I'm delighted with it - it's almost the same step up in image quality over my 350D as the 350D was over a digital compact camera. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I've had a 5D now for over a year, and it's a splendid camera. In fact even when(if) it's replacement comes out it will still be a splendid camera.

As the pixel count goes up so does the amount of storage space needed, especially if you're shooting RAW. Thank goodness for external hard drives.

The general felling here is to wait and see. I can't disagree with that .

The rumor mill indicates a possible pre PMA announcement, so only about 4-5 weeks to wait. If the rumor is to believed.

Even if they do announce a new model it may be several months before it's available if current announcements / availability carries on.

Plus you could pick up a bargain on a current 5D

I already started a wish list of L lenses :-) Thats gonna cost more that the camera at this rate.
 
Personally, I'd keep an eye on the for sale stuff on this forum, 5D's come up from time to time and a 1Ds mk 1 also would fit the bill, I'd expect. I will be selling mine just after the New Year when I return from holiday, and it is a really great camera, plus you'll have a good chance of getting an accurate history from people here, not like flea bay!

That's something well worth looking at. I bought a 5D earlier this year to work with my 1D II and I kinda wish I'd have got the 1D S.

The 5D is great, the image quality is really good and it's not overly stocked in silly functions but it's like a toy in build quality and as someone who uses it for work, that scares me.
 
So just to make it more complicaed - does anyone have opinions on the 1D Vs. the Nikon 2Dx?

There MUST really be a solid build to the 1 series then because I would imagine that the 5D would at least be on par with the 20/30/40 series. I have only handled a 5D once or twice and I was quite happy with the build quality:suspect::thinking::D
 
The 5D is I'd say better in build quality than the 40D, but the 1Ds is in a different league, but on the other hand it's a good deal heavier, and of course a lot more obvious and ostentatious.

Any bids for mine?:lol::lol:

The battery grip (BG-E4) that sits underneath the camera.

Your enquiry will lead me to think that you do not have one?:shrug:

Are you seriously looking at selling the 1Ds?

Did a quick side-by-side comparison on dpreview and it has some functions the 5D does not have.

Only pity 3 years older though, but yours sound good as new though.
 
Yes, I am serious, I've a mk3 coming shortly. It's just had a sensor clean, will e mail some pics if you send me your address by pm. It's just had light keen amateur use, will have 2 spare batteries etc. Will be advertising it here shortly, want to get the festivities over!!

Haha - well i wasnt around to see the jack so dont worry. I'm still interested in opinions on the 2Dx now though so if anyone has anything to offer I'm all ears

No, seriously, I'm sure it is a great camera and the Nikonites will be around to slaughter me, I know...:exit:

Fact is, if you have chosen between the two you normally don't change easily and you did say that you have some Canon glass already.

I hope it is EF without the S otherwise you will not be able to use it on the 5D and bigger (1D series) bodies. Preferably good L glass especially if you go full frame as has been said already.

The only Nikon I would entertain would be the D3.

But then Canon built this one more than 2 years ago already and they called it the 5D.

I have purposely avoided getting the EF-S lenses for the simple reason of looking ahead. I think I am pretty much stuck on Canon - and I guess the 5D was two years ahead of it's time - so now it's about the best choice :-)
 
I have always said that s glass is a long term mistake, I think unless you really can't afford it get non s glass
