Yes
I am looking for a canon camera for my daughters school/college work. I need advice as to which would be the better option. The options are EOS 500d 18-55is or the new EOS 1100d with the 18-55is lens. I would like to stay with the cannon as I already have lenses that fit both cameras. Thankyou for you help in advance.

The 500D is the better option out of the two. Greater mega pixels, higher ISO range, sturdier body are just a few things better. Does your daughter need video? If not what about a second hand 40D? Might be a better option for the money.

I doubt many people here would have had experience of the 500D and the 1100D so the best answers you are going to get are internet hear-say. Contrary what has been said here the 1100D has as good, if not better, high ISO performance as it has Digic 4 processor.

I'd recommend getting down to your local shop and trying them out.

What he said.

I'd add that a 2nd hand 450d would probably be a good bet too. But Ive got one and am biased. It will let you bracket shots, select spot exposure metering and some fairly advanced settings which Id have thought would be ok for a college course.

I'd suggest a 2nd hand Canon 350D, and spend any money left over on good lenes.

The 500D also has a Digic 4 processor. The 500d has a better ISO performance. Some call it internet hearsay others call it specifications on Canon's website.

Both are good one and performs equally well. If you want a dedicated video feature than go with Canon 500d also the best way to choose is to try and handle both models and see which feels better for you and which features are required.

Second hand 40D unless you want video would be my choice, I have had a 500D and a 40D and the latter is far better. If the choice is just between the 1100 and 500 I'd say the 500.
