For the first time my camera let me down today.
I have a Canon EOS 40D, bought new from WEX last April & has been faultless until today, had taken around 500 shots with it over the weekend & all of a sudden wouldn't take & flashed up error 99, so changed battery still didn't work, changed CF card-still no luck, changed lens, still no luck.
The mirror flicks up, but just won't take the picture.
It has the latest firmware too.
Any ideas what could be causing it?

Many thanks
HS.

Try cleaning the electrical contacts between lens and body. I think you can do this with a pencil rubber, but be careful no shrapnel falls into the camera body or lens.

err99 is just a generic "something is wrong" code.

I tend to get what you are describing when my battery is flat, but you said you have charged it. Do you have more than one battery? it could be a case of the battery not holding any power.

I got an err99 message last year and the camera stopped functioning all together. If you are in any way unsure ring Warehouse Express. They organised sending mine back to Canon for repair (as I had bought it from them).

Have tried different batteries, genuine ones & 3rd party ones, contacts seem clean, but haven't got a pencil rubber anywhere in the house to try! Will try WEX & Canon tomorrow, as need the camera next sunday at latest :S

I would check the pins for the cf card as they can bend, Just look done the card slot they should all be straight, If one is bent it will need to be sent back for repair.

I've got Err99 on my 400D aswell, but only on one CF card, works fine with another one in it.

My Err99 is clearly a problem with the card so it may not be your camera at all !

I've just had this with my 40D. Turned out to be a faulty shutter mechanism. As it was covered by jessops 3 year warrenty it went off to their repairer Calmunet, who took several weeks of telling me they'd have the bits in a couple of days, before finally deciding they couldn't fix it and sent it to canon.

I'd had enough, got vouchers for a replacement and bought a 50D

Try firing the shutter without a lens attached - this will rule out lenses as being an issue...

Yep, tried that & still the same.
Spoken to Canon this morning & it's off tomorrow for repair. So buying another one to get me by until this one comes back! Not a bad excuse for another body, can't be without a spare. ;)
