Anyone using one of the above?
I am thinking about adding one to my kitbag, I have a 5D3 but it's a big old heavy lump and for general holiday snaps I was thinking about using something lighter but not mirrorless as I like an optical viewfinder. I did look at a comparison website tool and I was surprised to see it came out well in the tests against my FF camera.
I would be buying second hand and I'm looking at size as the main thing so I know there are better cameras but it's very small and light which is the main criteria.
I need to stay with Canon because of my other kit.

Hi

Sorry cannot help with your question on 20d as am a Nikon users, however I recently purchased a RX100 M3 for the size reason and am loving it. It is a mirrorless camera but if you can get a chance to try one do so.

For general holiday snaps I'd look at a 1" sensor compact but they're "mirrorless" and have an evf. I can see the appeal of evf's but I'll never go back as evf's just offer so much more...

Having said that I took my 1" compact, a Panasonic TZ100, on holiday recently and took about 4 pictures with it compared to over 1k with my Sony A7 and 35mm f2.8 which is a very compact and light combination.

Good luck choosing but I don't think that I'd personally be happy with a Canon APS-C camera for any length of time. I think it's a recipe for frustration and disappointment with perhaps not enough saving in bulk and weight to tip the balance in its favour.

Reasons?? I have a 50D but although lighter than the 5D3 it's still fairly large/heavy.

Because as I said, for me a Canon APS-C probably wouldn't offer me enough of a saving in bulk and weight to justify buying one for general holiday snaps. Does it give enough saving in bulk and weight to justify the buy for you?

I suppose a lot depends on the lenses. Mount a small light prime and I could be happy enough but a FF 24-105mm would be a completely different proposition.

To give you an idea of how my mind works I have a Sony A7, a couple of RF style MFT cameras and a 1" compact. I mostly use the A7 with a 35mm prime (a 35mm f2.8 has been my main lens but I recently bought a f1.8) and I took that on holiday and it did everything I wanted but some wouldn't be happy with just one prime. I find that the A7 + 35mm is so small that I tend to ignore my MFT kit as none of these will fit in a pocket anyway and if using a small bag the A7 which is really just the EVF hump bigger than my RF style MFT cameras is fine in the bag with water bottles and snacks and the like and it's small and inobtrusive enough to be used in many situations. If I want even smaller or to shoot silently the 1" compact is an option and it has a 24-250mm equivalent zoom and the picture quality whilst not even at MFT level is good enough for whole pictures at ISO 12,800 when viewed normally.

You may be happy with a Canon APS-C but as you said size was a biggie for you I do wonder if it'll offer enough of a saving?

I don't have the 200d, but after reading the spec, I would say it would suit your needs. Not a fare comparison to your 5diii, but the view finder gives 95% coverage (which may or may not take some getting used too), it only has 9 focus points, which for your holiday snaps is probably fine. The sensor gives very similar results too the 80d, so not too shabby. I can't think of a smaller bodied DSLR, so I would say you are quite restricted to the 200d or the older 100d.

Lighter yes but still quite bulky.Have you thought of trying out the Canon M mount cameras with the adaptor. Smaller and lighter and still compatible with your existing stuff.

I have but price also comes into the equation and just to throw another spanner I'm thinking of bolting to my telescope for astro stuff.
