I have set Custom function 17.1 on my Id Mk IIN to expand the AF points to 7 when photographing moving subjects with unpredictable movement. I think this setting will automatically be enabled when A1 Servo AF is selected, but will revert to the centre focus point when one shot AF is selected. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks
 
Not absolutely certain Barry but would expect when you go to 1 shot your af point may be selected from any number of the points, from the complete ring of fire to all the others shown when this ring lights up, so if you have the centre point selected then this is the one it will use. When you go to AI servo, however, it will stay with the point previously selected, ie the centre one, although I'm not sure if the focus assist points will be activated. I'm sure someone with that body will be able to confirm.
 
Thanks for your response George. I will obviously have to do some more research. I think I am correct in what I am saying - if I have read the instruction manual properly? - but just wanted some confirmation.
 
Yes, the manuals are really not too clear on some of these points. Best of luck with the camera!!
 
I've never seen my 1dmk2 use the expanded AF points setting in single AF mode, and i did a bit of testing with this. Furthermore the setting while in servo AF will only expand onto other AF points when the currently selected one loses it's lock.
 
Thanks to everyone for responding. Only one thing to do is to try it on a moving object and deliberately move it off focus and see what happens. I will let you know when I try it over the weekend.
