So waddaya do when the end task isn't responding either?

shheesh! I hate computers, but I love them too, I hate them more.

Just blowing steam, not looking for a reply

hit repeatedly with hammer........

You need to press 'Alt', 'Ctrl' - 'shift' and 'Fn' at the same time and hold ... then press 'end' and 'F7' this will complete the 'End .. End task' function and remove the annoying function box .... HTH .. ;)

Then I suggest you click 'start' to end the session and re-start the computer... or alternatively try SysRq and 'F4' and hold whilst pressing the shift key ...

Usually works!

I just go straight to killing the actual process anyway, Linux style. 'End task' is one of those many useless things in Windows, because it actually requests the program to exit using its own function. Usually one is using end task because it won't close in this manner, which is why it often fails. If you don't believe me, go into Microsoft Word, type some gobbledygook, and then do your 'end task' thing. It will pop a dialog asking do you want to save the progress, as if you just 'exited' the program.

Right click the offending item in task manager, and select 'go to process'. Then right click the item that is highlighted, and select 'end process'. Answer yes to the prompt warning and your crashed program will disappear immediately. Works 99% of the time.

I just use the end-process within the task manager if I want to quickly kill something. Its probably not good for the computer though :p

It doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to the computer or the operating system, or even the program. The only thing that would be affected is any unsaved data.

Thanks for the replies, I didn't know about using the Fn key too so I've learnt something from my rant.

:plusone: I usualy give it a couple of minutes once I have tried to halt the programme, but I also got a big button as backup which is either on or off, and tbh if you got a prog that is hanging your better off doing a reboot anyway

Turning off a modern PC with a modern OS, without shutting down first rarely has any ramifications.

Unlike Windows 3.1 and DOS etc, which pretty much held everything in memory until you shut it down, modern operating systems by comparison don't cache that much, especially Linux and suchlike, so you really don't lose anything when there's a powercut except in rare circumstances. Journalling in the NTFS filesystem also helps to prevent data loss due to sudden shutdown.
