encyclopedia of media, is there such a thing?

Hi,

Are there any books out there that present the different types of photographic media explaining their distinct visual artifacts and the physical and technilogical differences??

or are there too few to make an encyclopedia out of?

perhaps it might include: deguerreotype, poloroid, film, speciality films, different types of photographic papers, maybe fashions within photography, cyanotypes and camera that were highly regarded because of distictive feel they had.

I would really love to have an encycoledia like this.
