I've been trying to sign up to substack, but I'm not getting the sign up email verification email delivered.

With Substack's (AI?) support. they tried sending test emails to all three of my email addresses. My own domain address, my gmail address and my fastmail address. None of their emails arrived. While this was going on, I was receiving emails to all three addresses from other people.

They offered an account verification that didn't use email but couldn't offer any solution to me not receiving their emails. They also suggested that I ask google (and my other providers) if they had blocked the substack domain (which I thought unlikely, and if google had done it, I suspect substack would have pretty quick to have found out). Apart from chasing up the possibility of the substack domain being blocked I tried all their other suggestions, but none fixed the issue.

It's all a bit beyond me (and Substack support) but has anyone any idea about what might be going on here.

Probably the stupidest reply ever but I'm guessing you checked your spam folders?
If that's not it, are they getting an error when sending? (invalid address, email address not known etc)

Thanks, but yes, I checked spam folders (before I contacted support) and added the substack address to my address book.

I'm assuming they weren't getting an error their end, I didn't think to ask, but before repeatedly sending re-sending emails I would have hoped they will have checked.

I did go back and check that I hadn't mistyped any of my addresses and I hadn't.

Oh dear. Well other than a shrug emoji I'm out of thoughts..

As they are being sent to three unconnected email systems, using three different email clients, my instinct is that the problem is at substack.

There is an internal blocking system for notification emails at substack. If you find you aren't receiving notification emails (ie of a new post) they give instructions on how you can go into the substack system and "unblock" your email address. Now I realise this is different from my problem but its interesting that this exists.

Not sure if it's relevant to your problem, but I've seen reports of users of Proton Mail having their emails dumped rather than delivered by G$$gle and/or Micro$oft. Apparently this is an increasing issue with various lower-volume email systems. It might in some way be related to this anti-competitive behaviour which they "justify" on the basis of spam control (wile happily delivering tons of spam themselves, much more than used to get through).

Thanks, but I don't know if that is relevant or not because I don't understand how it all works.

I'm hoping it's a glitch at Substack, which will get sorted. Because, as I said, I find it hard to believe that three different email providers, with three different email addresses and three different email clients (Gmail and two different webmail readers) are all blocking substack domain emails.

I do have an ongoing, and very occasional, issue with my main email address (myotis.co.uk) and mailing lists not working, but never with the gmail or fastmail addresses.
