I got an email from Topaz recently saying that as I was a founder customer (flattery will get you everywhere.....) I am eligible for something, but I don't quite understand what.

It also says they are launching Topaz Studio on Sept 16th which appears to be a collection of their various apps, but it will be subscription only.

Did anyone else get this email, and what did they think of it?

Yes I got one a few days ago. Guessing the usual BS and its generic

Used to use Topaz when they offered individual applications, still use the older version of denoise on occasions when they swapped over to the all applications in one I passed on them as why pay for applications I would never use? If they returned to the option of buy individdually I would consider trying them again.

From what their email appeared to be saying, there is no chance they will offer Denoise as a separate app. I do find the sharpen app in Photo AI useful and effective when all else fails, though.

Yes I also have the Sharpen AI individual app but as I say would probably never use
Adjust Lighting
Recover Faces
Preserve Text
Upscale
Balance Color
Remove Objects
Dust & Scratch
Super Focus v2
suppose it is an app for all round photography rather than individual subjects.
Russ.

Indeed.

Hmm, I wonder what that means for Topaz Photo AI users, like myself?

I didnt get any email but just looking quickly on their website they seem to offer concurrent desktop (studio) packages of photo ai and video ai, and a new web based subscription service. Maybe the intention is to start forcing everyone onto web services within a year or two. Saas is very trendy these days in business community and topaz is trying to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

What they are doing now is becoming largely more and irrelevant to me, with adobe caught up with denoise, etc. sharpen ai is like the only thing that is occasionally useful (not photo ai, which doesn't give satisfactory results). If they remotely kill sharpen ai i will super p***ed, but either way - no more $ to them from me

I did successfully sharpen an image using Topaz AI recently which was too much for LR...... it has its uses.

It looks like Topaz Photo AI is being replaced by something called Topaz Photo - no idea what the difference is - which will be subscription only, starting at $17/month. At today's exchange rate that's £12.50/month or £150/year. Makes Adobe's Photography subscription (especially when purchased on Amazon's Prime days) sound like an absolute bargain  :$

I guess I'll just continue using Photo AI until it stops working and then figure out what to do next but I doubt it will include Topaz (y)

While away on the north coast of Spain I did some landscape images at up to 3.2 secs handheld. Needless to say they weren't quite sharp, and LR couldn't quite cope, so I put one through Photo AI. It was able to sharpen it but it came out with a colour cast and looked like it had gone through some kind of distortion lens. Both were fixable so I would say that Photo AI is usable in an emergency but I wouldn't rely on it for day to day use.

I haven't looked into the subscription version but I won't be subscribing. Hopefully the Photo AI that I bought about a year ago will still work.

@GreenNinja67 : Thanks for the video.

I have been playing with the "new" Topaz Photo for the past week and can concur with the vlogger that it is just a res-skinned Topaz Photo AI. Looking at the 50-or so images I've put through both programs the end result is exactly the same. I disagree with his assessment of the performance of Photo AI, however, except to say that if you use the Autopilot feature and let the program set what it thinks is needed to improve your images without then adjusting the settings then you might be disappointed. My routine is to not use Autopilot but have default settings for denoise, sharpen, etc., as starting points which I then adjust to suit.

According to the information in my Topaz Labs account Topaz Photo retails at $199/year but, as a longstanding customer, mine will cost just $84/year, which is what I paid for Photo AI in December 2024. I have no idea if this level of discount will be maintained, but I doubt it. For sure, going down the subscription route will cost Topaz Labs customers but they will increase revenue in the long term, as did Adobe.

I'm undecided about whether to adopt the new Photo or stick with Photo AI in it's current guise and forego whatever improvements they make in the future.

I've just had a renewal notice for photo AI which I bought outright a year ago. They want £99 off me and have given me 3 days notice. What a bloody shower!
