I have been using outlook 2002 on my XP machine for years now but have just read that it is no good for windows 7 (I am taking delivery of a windows 7 PC soon). From what I read windows 7 does not come with a email program although there seems to be several free ones around - can anyone recommend one please. I would need one that I could import my .pst files if possible.

I use Postbox, almost identical to Mozilla Thunderbird but with a few tweaks that make it better.
 
I too use Thunderbird.
 
Thunderbird sets it up automatically.
 
Of course Outlook 2010 is available - what you are used to but not free.

How much automatically? I know my e-mail addy and password but can't remember all the POP3 settings etc. I can get at the mails via my Blackberry but if I want to see anything on a real computer I have to forward the mails to my gmail account.

It does all I require

I have it attached to my BT account, my hotmail (now outlook) account, my gmail account and the mail account for a website I run.
No probs.

Postbox will set up pop3 accounts automatically. Although I prefer to set up accounts manually as many are imap and I prefer to use an alternative smtp account for outgoing. I run Postbox on both macs & M****e with up to eight accounts on a couple machines.
 
Thanks to everyone for the feedback - I already use Firefox so I guess I will try Thunderbird.
My PC arrives in about a week so I may well be back for more help :bonk:
 
Or you could just use webmail.

I've been using Outlook 2003 pretty much since release until about a year ago, when I weaned myself off it. Now, as a Gmail user for many years and Android phone owner for almost three years, I've binned it completely and just use the browser on my PC (laptop) for all my email accounts - Gmail, Hotmail and Freeserve. Google takes care of my calendar, contacts and tasks too, and everything syncs seamlessly between all my devices, so Outlook really is redundant for me.

It took me a while to become happy with the conversion to the web, but now I am quite happy with it and would not go back to the old way of doing things. Everything stays safely in the cloud - anything I read gets archived rather than deleted - and I don't have my PC cluttered up with ever growing files and a bloated registry. If I re-install or upgrade my OS then no worries about re-installing and configuring my Outlook either. Google remembers and syncs all my bookmarks, and all I need to do is to fire up my browser, log into Google and carry on with business as usual. It matters not whether I find a PC running XP, MCE, Vista, 7, 8, OS X or Ubuntu. One logon to Google gets me to all my stuff instantly, anywhere in the world. That's much better than having my Outlook files languishing back home or gone for good when my hard drive packs in or gets stolen.
 
I just use windows live mail client at home, does what it says on the tin. never liked thunderbird for some reason.

google can do one also.. damn info grabbing, self software installing buggers.

Windows live mail ? as far as I aware it is free :shrug:

I would say Thunderbird is fine as long as you don't need to use Exchange, as I'm pretty sure it will not "talk" to exchange at all. Annoying really as the email & calendar client on an iphone works fine with exchange and it's not even microsoft software.
 
Like Neil, on my windows machine, I use windows live mail (free), it retains an 'outlook' type feel to it, so you should be comfortable using it.
 
I've been using Outlook 2007 on my XP then 7 machine for years now without any problems. Does everything I need and synchs with my phone perfectly.

Look around and you should be able to find Office Pro 2007 dirt cheap now.

There are problems with outlook 2002/3/7 on windows 7
 
I have downloaded a copy of Thunderbird on my current XP machine just to get a feel for it before the win 7 machine comes.
I have set-up a couple of my email accounts (manual set-up) which work fine (a BT account and a fs2 account) but I am getting this warning coming up - what is this all about?

Basically its just warning you that you're not using encryption. Unless your ISP offer that I wouldn't worry.
 
There are problems with outlook 2002/3/7 on windows 7

Been using Outlook 2007 on Win 7 for a couple of years now with absolutely no problems.

Thanks Mike, I am only going by what I am reading on the web besides I have no intentions of buying outlook 2007 just to get my email (if I can avoid it).

I have now set-up a couple of my email accounts on Thunderbird on my soon to be replaced PC to see if I like it.
One question for you Thunderbird user:- is there a way of automatically getting mail from all your accounts or do you have to select each account in turn to get mail?

Yes. On the Tools->Accounts Settings->email account->Server Settings there are 2 options: Check for new messages at startup and check for new messages every...

Set those how you want how often you want things checked.

BTW: I run in IMAP for all my mailboxes, that way, the "cloud" is my physical mailbox and I can then see the latest status on all the devices I use.

Thanks for that, I have found those settings. I guess what I was needing to know is if there was a way of consolidating all the accounts into one inbox (like in outlook) or do you need to click into each inbox in turn?

I would agree, Live Mail is just like a newer version of Outlook, Thunderbird just looks and feels old and clumsy, like a 20th century program piggybacking on a 21st century OS.

I hope it's better than Outlook 2010. That's a real pile of .... (I use it daily at work)
 
disagree (we have 200~ users on it) :D
I'm on a corporate flavour (I work in a corporation of 40,000+ people worldwide) - no idea how much that affects it, but here are my observations:

  • It is unstable - it restarts itself once a day (or thereabouts)
  • .pst files are limited in how they can be manipulated as "everything is in one boat" unlike TB where each mail file is fundamentally a single plain text file.
  • The display is idiotic. I get 150+ emails a day - mostly from an automated bug system. I use conversation view. When in conversation view, I can't have more than one conversation expanded at once. Arrgghhh....
  • I still haven't fully worked out which message Outlook selects as the "next" message when I delete a message from my inbox. It appears random, it won't be, but it doesn't do what I want it to do!
  • I have a plugin I don't want that keeps reloading itself, even though I delete it every time I start Outlook...
  • .pst files and backups. Hmm....

I use it as it integrates with Exchange and Communicator (which I use a lot as people are spread across several time zones and most people I work with don't have English as their native language). I switched from Thunderbird around a year ago simply to get more integrated with the communications systems here. I run Thunderbird at home....
 
Thanks again for the help folks - Now that I have been able to consolidate all the emails accounts into one inbox Thunderbird looks fine for my email needs.
Now I just need to work out how to get all my Calendar entries from outlook to Thunderbird Calendar!
