No
Vernon Unsworth gets what he deserves and that is nothing, how could he even think a claim for £145m in damages would fly? some quite ridiculous comments about his life being over and other stupid remarks.

Brilliant. I always wanted to publicly call someone a P**** and suggest they're a child rapist. Now I can.

Though I do believe Musk should have been made to recognise that his tweet did defame Mr Unsworth, I'm pleased that ultimately no damages were even considered.

I personally believe that had he not pursued this case, by now few would even remember the "insult" in question and Mr Unsworth would be back to his relatively quiet existence.

The case itself is what's kept the incident alive, and in bringing the legal action, he's responsible for that.

Don't get me wrong, though, imo Elon Musk is a fricking nob of the highest order and one day "karma" will catch up.

I can't see this as anything except a miscarriage of justice. As it's a civil case perhaps Vernon Unsworth has grounds to appeal.

The amount of damages sought does appear to be preposterous. Unsworth would have probably been better advised in seeking a nominal sum like a dollar.

He probably will appeal and I hope he get rinsed as a result, seriously ! he was called a bad name which was retracted, the word wasn't even used in full, and he wanted £140 million pounds, he said he was given a life sentence, his life was over, and other total nonsense, the guy was dragged into this by greedy scumbag lawyers after nothing but cash, not one person on the planet thought he was a p*** or even knew who he was. This had nothing to do with justice this was people looking for a free handout. Would he have take you or me to court? the answer is NO. I do believe this guy didn't want to do this, he has been played by the showbiz lawyers.

Yup. We can hope.

I disagree. I think it's more than that. I've been called a few things and I've used some cringing Anglo Saxon myself but calling a man a p*** on line is IMO on a whole different level.

Were are these levels you speak of, is there a levels list in law ? not one person actually thinks the guy is a p*** including Musk, if he was called "a s*** crappy diver" that would have been worse as it had some connection to him. I stand by the fact that if this was anyone else it wouldn't have even made the local paper, let alone got to court. pure and simply greed from the lawyers. imagine if the conversation was in the pub, worse case would someone got a slap, you wouldn't be stood on the car park crying, wanting 140 million pounds off the guy because your life was over !

And from Mr Unsworth.
I am convinced he was dragged into this, he was happy to let it go when it happened, he was apologised to and looked like he left it at that, people have knocked on his door, sold him the dream of millions and the rest is history. would be interesting to see what the percentage/payout was for the lawyers if they won?

I've a feeling many opinions on this thread are based more on an apparent hatred of a certain Mr Musk than any actual foundation in law.

If you can't see a difference I'm happy for you but you must accept that other people have different standards for what's an acceptable insult between men and what isn't.

For me at least you're way off. I couldn't give a flying other than after this debacle thinking he's a twit.

Exactly so how do you deal with that in a court ? an insult is an insult is it not? just because you think one is worse than the other is irrelevant really.

Quite possibly, but ultimately the decision to pursue the case was his. If he was lured by dollar signs then he's equally as greedy as the lawyers.

When I try to imagine myself in the position of this guy I would be certainly demanding for full unreserved apology and probably a lawsuit, so I can totally understand it. The sum was a bit ridiculous, that another matter.

I hope they can appeal. Slander has little to do with free speech; you have to be able to prove it at least or there are consequences.

I don't much like Musk more and more but that has nothing to do with the course of the law of course.

So I'm assuming if someone posted pictures up around your town with your face and text saying "This guy is a p****" you'd be totally fine with that?

Clearly not, but what has your scenario got to do with this? it has no relevance to what happened, if your going to come up with comparisons then at least make them comparable.

Elon musk wasn't happy his submarine was ridiculed so retorted to name calling , he desperately wanted the worldwide publicity for the rescue , when he didn't get it he threw his toys out of the pram.
Calling someone a paedophile online is unacceptable IMO, the damages claimed were proportionate to his wealth , like a speeding fine based on income for normal people.

As musk is like a god to americans no way a jury was going to let him lose.I really don't see how you could get an unbiased jury in that situation.

But he didn't call him a paedophile he said "p*** guy" which as he explain meant dirty old man where musk grew up, the point which is clearly being missed by people is the legal action would NOT have been taken against someone who didn't have substantial cash, this was about making money.

You forget that Musk said it must be true because otherwise Unsworth would sue???

I think it's kind of funny that multi billionaire genius publicly calls normal bloke "p*** guy" then, when sued, his defence is along the lines of - didn't mean it. No, nothing to do with paedos. Obviously.

No idea why he's suing me. Must be because I'm rich.

It's f*****g hilarious that he won.

It doesn't matter what it means where he grew up, most people would assume he was calling him a pedophile because of where he chose to live , a country associated with men going there for sex

This says that's exactly what he meant when he said it

The head of Musk’s family office, Jared Birchall, also testified on Wednesday about efforts to dig up dirt on Unsworth that might prove the cave explorer was actually a pedophile.

A Californian jury was never going to let a billionaire lose a court case, all they think about is money, Musk is a god to them

The three South African folk I work with have never heard of the supposedly common and 2 of them (a married couple) are from Pretoria.

Well it must not be true then if the three people you know say so ! I am surprised they were not called as witnesses. At the end of the day two fully grown men had an argument and one decided to see if he could get rich of the other and he didn’t, case closed. If we all got took to court every time we called someone a nasty name we would get nothing done.
