Until I saw an ad on TV for the new album so I bought it and while I was buying it I spotted that other albums were £3-7 so I bought a load more :D I have the albums (LP's which I play on my Lynn Sondek or Garrard not that you younger folk will know what they are...) but I thought I'd treat myself as the CD's were so cheap and I'll be able to listen t them in the car or whilst washing up :D

Any other new / old album buyers, ELO or anyone else?

Favourite ELO track? I can't say I have one, I like a few :D

I was tempted to look for Wizard and The Move albums too and I may do.

PS. What HiFi?

I have Lynn and Garrard turntables, Arcam and Creek amps and Tannoy and Monitor Audio speakers :D

I've not heard the new album yet, but Jeff Lynn is a genius so I have high hopes.

I cruise charity shops for vinyl on a regular basis. I'm fussy and only buy near perfect albums

Last purchase was Steely Dan - Aja.

Without doubt, 'Concerto for a rainy day' on 'Out of the blue'. It occupies the whole of side 3 of the vinyl album and comprises 'Standing in the rain', 'Big wheels', 'Summer and lightning', and 'Mr Blue Sky'. An absolutely epic achievement.

The thing is though, I remember when I first heard it, I thought they'd never top it and it was all downhill from there. Unfortunately I think I was right.
 
I think that in the overall quality of albums you may be right but I think that both earlier and later albums still had great tracks.

Oh, I forgot, Travelling Wilburys were great too :D

Another vote for E.L.O. & The Travelling Wilburys.

For those that don't know The Travelling Wilburys was a "Group" made up of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty & Jeff Lynn.
 
I've heard the new album a few months ago.
It's like they've never been away!
 
Was going to buy tickets for their gig, but they're around £100 each.
What's that all about? They're good, but can think of better things to spend £200+ on, especially when it's not the original line up

I like Overture 10538 that was more recently boosted by being the title song of the film American Hustle.
The song is given more grunt with Roy Wood on his Chinese cello.

Its not ELO, its jeff lynne with elo tacked on to sell more cd`s. The album itself bears little resemblence to previous ELO albums and is more like a collection of Roy orbison and wilbury tracks, except `When I was a boy` I do like that.

Jeezzz I just looked on eBay to see what an LP12 is worth :eek: I remember a friend of mine buying a LP12 ITTOK ASAK ( think I remember that right) and I can't remember how much is was back in 1980 but I do remember thinking it was expensive.

He took it all back to Malaysia and the heat and humidity killed the ASAK in pretty short order as I remember.

We spent many wasted afternoons at a HI Fi shop next to Southwark Catherdal in London, this was just as CD was coming on the scene for audiophiles - much comparison and discussion.

I remember the LP12 needed quite a bit of setting up, another thing we spent hours chatting to the guys in the shop about. Think it was called the Sound Organisation~??

I can't remember how much I paid, I think I got it when I was 20 or 21 so that's over 30 years ago. I did have to take it back and get it rebuilt once when the suspension collapsed, that was free, I suspect that the price and the build quality are in no way related. Mine has an external PSU with switches for 33 and 45rpm. I can't remember who made it but the actual build quality was rubbish and the first thing I had to do was add a physical on / off switch and go over all the dry joints and once I'd done all that it was ok except that on power up it sometimes starts the turntable at either 33 or 45 rather than just power up and wait for a button to be pressed.

AFAIK some of the Lynn stuff was a complete rip off. I think that at least one of the cartridges they sold for a humungous amount was actually a lower end Audio Technica and I remember the reviewers gushing about this rebadged low end cartridge and claiming it was the best thing on the market. I'm pretty sure Audio Technical will have disagreed and would probably have placed their own more upmarket cartridges ahead of the badge job they produced for Lynn.

The build quality of some audio stuff back then was a total disgrace, a product no doubt of the kit being hand built in someone's bedroom. Actually the build quality of my Arcam amp is shocking too although I believe that later ones were better.

I have CD players as well, an Arcam and a Sony.

I bought 4 for the O2 and I believe it was just over £300 for the lot. Saw them last year at Radio 2's Festival in a Day at Hyde Park. A faultless performance, he's certainly still got it.
There's rumours Jeff is thinking of including Concerto for a Rainy Day in it's entirety in the concerts.
As for not ELO but Jeff with ELO tagged on, Richard is still in the line up, the string section Mik, Melvin and Hugh was dropped back in the 80's, Bev isn't interested in touring or playing anymore, and Kelly died several years ago.
 
Went to see Wizard last Sunday they played The Engine Shed Lincoln. Brilliant performance, they performed a good few Move tracks too.

the LP12 is one of the only products i have bought that had a warranty void seal if sold with the seal intact on the box
the dealer it was bought from had to set it up and allow it to settle, i had to wait 2 weeks before i could take mine home :(
the reality of the LP12's is they didn't like being disturbed it wasn't difficult to put them out of balance


just had a listen to some tracks off the new album and it's still very ELO but sounds to me as if the music is much more mature and made for pleasure rather than commercial success if you know what i mean which i prefer because we can listen to what the artist really wants to put forward
i find quite a few artists get so much better once they have established themselves they can concentrate on what they want to make rather than what the record company thinks will sell
 
... and it's all a refreshing change from the shouting warbling song torturers of the X-Factor.
 
I used to love ELO as a teenager and beyond. I remember buying the imported vinyl album "The Night the Light Went on in Long Beach" for £10 when most albums were about £2 or £3. I've got a fair few albums and still enjoy listening to them. The new album is good but in my opinion not a classic. The album length was a disappointment though at 40 minutes (32 minutes if you get the standard edition!). Just showing what a talent and professional Jeff Lynne is, he plays all the instruments on the whole album - except for some female backing vocals and the shaker plus tambourine on one or two of the tracks.

I had seeing ELO live on my bucket list but the cost of the tickets combined with the lack of other original group members meant I've decided not to go which I may regret but c'est la vie. In fact other than Richard Tandy I've seen all the other musicians in the live band when I took Sarah to see Gary Barlow live last year. They are also the Take That band. Not a bad set of musicians though.

For those going enjoy the concert.

Anyone got The Travelling Wilbury's second album, I can't seem to find it...

I was a bit apprehensive when I saw them last year but my fears were unnecessary. They were brilliant. I've seen them twice before, the Time tour and again in 1986 when they played support to Rod Stewart at Wembley Stadium, ELO was the only reason we went and it's the only concert I've been to where a support act were called back on for an encore which they duly gave. Both of those concerts never had many of the other musicians neither, but each time they have produced the sound perfectly.

Last years Hyde Park concert is available on DVD, it's worth getting. It was a result of Chris Evans having Jeff on his radio show and asking Jeff if he would agree to a full live show after doing a couple of numbers for a Children in Need Concert. Jeff said he would if there was a good response to the request. The show was bombarded with over 2000 emails, phone calls etc within a few minutes. Even after performing the first song at Hyde Park, Jeff was taken aback at what a reception he received and promised a new album and a world tour as a result. I failed to get tickets when they originally went on sale, but later the same day, they added another date, a few days later they added another, in the end they added around 3 extra dates in the UK and I believe they are still adding more around the world. April 2016 can't come a day too soon. ;)
 
I used to love ELO and have quite a few of their albums on vinyl and CD. However, having seen them on the TV the other night at the Royal Variety I was left feeling distinctly underwhelmed. I don't feel that their sound has aged too well at all, sounded very dated. Good in their time, but they should have left it there.
 
Ive got tickets against my better judgement and at £100 ach they re the most expensive ive ever bought . I too saw the BBC session on Iplayer and whilst they sounded good I was distinctly underwhelmed. From what I've heard of the new Album its not ELO its Jeff Lynne and very much Roy Orbison/Travelling Wilburys. I noticed Jeff also produced Bryan Adams's new single and completely morphed it into something very Beatlesque. I 'm sure it'll be a good gig but i'm not feeling very inspired by it.

I think you'll find he produced Bryan Adams latest album and he did the same, if not most of Take That's latest album also.

You are totally right he'd turned Bryan Adams into someone I didn't recognise! I don't listen to Take That though I was dragged along to one of their gigs once!
 
Saw them at Wembley arena in 1981, feels like several lifetime's ago ....
 
I remember buying Out of the Blue on Vinyl when It came out - and that was a life time ago in 1977!

Turn to Stone was the first ELO vinyl that I bought, I then bought Out of the Blue (I think I have a 2nd copy of OUT of The Blue with an unmade cardboard spaceship insert) followed by their back catalogue and all their future singles as they came out, including boxsets of the albums. I also have signed hardback and paperback copies of Bev Bevan's book, The Electric Light Orchestra Story. I've bought many of the import versions of albums too. Recently I bought a CD boxset containing all their albums which include a lot of previously unreleased tracks.

Couldn't agree more, but I guess that by re branding it "Jeff Lynne's ELO" it sounds up to date.
Ken Bruce on R2 has been giving them a lot of air time, lots of mentions, including live sessions, on his show.
He either likes them a lot, or someone has bunged someone a few quid ;)
 
All the tracks I could find online are ballady and soft with some Wilburyness too. Nothing punchy so far. Not sure where I can find all the tracks.
 
ELO are one of the (very) few groups that I've always wanted to see live but never managed to. After getting a heads up via O2 Priority I have now purchased tickets for the Saturday night gig at The O2 next year and can't wait. I watched the Hyde Park gig on tele the other day and it looked like everyone in the crowd really enjoyed it so bring it on...

Although I am a big fan of Hawkwind and on the news of Lemmy's passing tonight have been listening to Hawkwind and Motorhead, I was a big fan of ELO and managed to get to quite a few concerts including the Wembley Arena charity show of their Spaceship stage with the late Tony Curtis as compere for the evening.
My hifi has morphed over the years with my favourite being refurbished last year, Garrard 401/SME arm with shure cartridge, Nakamichi OMS 1 CD Player, Pioneer A400 Amp (pro upgrade/rebuild), Rogers Studio Monitors 1988 vintage. Van der val cables. I have a pair of Wharfedale 121 speakers which I use for techno/trance stuff. Rebuilding a Quad 33/303/FM3 combo at the moment but only when I feel up to it.

- I'm glad I got it but it's not as good as I'd hoped.
- I think that a few tracks could have sneaked onto previous ELO albums but on the whole it's rather weak.
- Jeff's voice is familiar but little else is and for me apart from his voice it doesn't sound like ELO, but of course they could have morphed into this album...
- I hope he sticks with it but maybe returns to a more recognisable ELO sound.

Overall, maybe 6/10 but I'm still glad I got it, it's still better than the wailing shouty song torturers of the X Factor :D

PS... And I wish they'd put it in a proper CD case not a cardboard sleeve.
