Hi there, I am Dan:)
I bought my first DSLR today, an EOS400d

I had a (very) old fujica film (as in an STX1, older then i am!) - which I used... a bit.

Basically, I joined, hoping to gain some hints, but you are all so so so good!

So I think i will lurk, and experiment on my own!

If I get stuck, would you mind some numpty questions?:|

i.e. I tried to get a lighting flame earlier, and,,, well.. it was very, very dark (set ISO to 1600 - don't know how to set appeture etc!!!)...
any hints or :help: for numpty question#1?

ta:-)

oh, forgot to add, my brother has a d80, and my mother a d40:)

 Welcome to TP! Numpty questions are more than welcome :D

Best way to set aperture is to turn the dial to Aperture priority (not sure what that is on the Canon) and make sure it's at the lowest number.. the camera will then select an appropriate shutter speed for the conditions, then you can up the ISO if the shutter speed isn't quick enough.

Av mode is aperture priority on you 400D - and yeah turn it to that then use the dial next to the shutter release to turn the apature to the lowest number it will go to - such as 5.6. This will allow more light onto the sensor, but really shrink your depth of field, so you focus needs to be spot on! Then have a play and see what happens, might still need a high ISO if the only light is the flame.

oh yeah - and Howdy :) Welcome the forums!
