Have Elinchrom stopped shipping the speedrings together as a complete kit? I’ve ordered one and there’s no speedring. It’s down as an accessory on WEX website but they always used to come complete? Really not clear on the website.

I’ll be blooming annoyed if theres an extra £50 to add to the cost. I find the price tag of them to be difficult to justify really given the materials as it is, all companies must be making a ridiculous mark-up on softboxes.

Well I’ve had a response from WEX and looks like they are separate now. It’s a crafty way of adding £30 on top of an already over-inflated product. The website isn’t particularly clear, it should state “speedring separate” IMO.

Yes I think they've changed it, they did update the design relatively recently (you can spot the difference by the colour of the bag, it used to be a grey and now it's black).

If you go to http://www.theflashcentre.com they now let you specify it without a speedring which is nice in theory but misses the whole point of the Rotalux design, they're convenient because you can just take them out of their case press the rods in and you're set but if you have to swap speed rings between different softboxes you lose the whole ease/speed advantage and the rods are only designed for the small holes on the Rotalux speedring so they won't be a great fit on generic speed rings.

When I bought my first Rotalux softboxes they let me buy the Profoto mount speed rings separately for only £16 (I think) now that was a bloody good deal.

Strictly speaking though you're not actually paying more, the price would never have been that cheap had you bought the old version but I do think Elinchrom are setting themselves up for annoyed customers because any third parties selling it won't offer the speed ring as part of the sale.

I may have one, need to check tomorrow

That's unfair, you are paying for more than just a label.
I never suggested you were paying for just a label, only that suitable alternatives were available cheaper.

Elinchrom seems to fall apart
This is not just a Label, this is an Elinchrom Rotalux label - to be honest I have one and at the moment I say great but in reality I have Lencarta soft boxes where the silver lining is intact but having visited 2 other photographers studios their Elinchrom silver lining is peeling off very early in life.

Bought the 130x50 which had £30 off in the Black Friday deal at £150. I'm certain 12 months ago they were £200 as they were, grey bag and complete.

I'm annoyed with WEX as they didn't have it in but it's not clear that the ring is separate on the site, it's been probably 18 months since I bought one (Flash Centre) and was complete. You'd think they would question whether you'd need one at time of order placement. We have certain things at work that need an accessory and always question someone if ordered on their own, usually it's their mistake/misunderstanding.

Thanks Mike, that's mighty good of you. I dissembled another one to use earlier, but no point swapping rings as mentioned, defeats the point.

I have some Lencarta and other softboxes. Nothing wrong with those, but I do quite like the rotalux design, but sure, there's a brand premium attached.

I haven't seen it happen on their newer models and I wouldn't be shocked if it's still the case but that doesn't change my point, they're more expensive to make and have better support, those things add to the cost so to say it's just an expensive brand is to ignore that there are some valid reasons for it being more expensive.

Yes, I have one sat beside me because I had to buy the Bowens adaptor, happy to send it on on the basis that you make a donation here when it arrives with you https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dorsetphotoevent-4-airambuance (to be honest I was just as peeved for paying for something I did not need)

This had me a few weeks back.

I note that the 130x50 does read:- Requires optional speedring - see accessories. Maybe like my mine this has now been changed since you complained.

Mine at the time read:-
  • Redesigned locking with wing nut
  • Redesigned snap locks
  • New light speedring blar blar blar
But the ring was not included, Wex did do free shipping but I had to buy the ring, I did complain that the listing "implied" it was included, some of the softboxes (100cm Octa) do come with the new ring but my 70 did not, I ordered a new one a month back 110x90 and it had the ring, hence why I assumed my new Octa would have it, but no. I now see the 110x90 does not have a ring???

Edit: The 110x90 no longer has a ring, mine was only ordered couple of months back, gone down £10.00 but now needs the £45.00 ring.....work that out.

Full disclosure - I work for a retailer that sells Elinchrom (not WEX). So i'm trying to leave any opinion out of my post.

Elinchrom Rotalux boxes used to come with an EL ring included. Now the ring has been removed to be sold separately and the price of the separate ring reduced from the cost of the whole package. So the price is exactly what it used to be.

The reason the ring has been removed is so that those who want Bowens fit, Profoto fit, Profoto OCF and others can chose only the ring they want for their softbox rather than in effect having to pay for the ring they need and an EL ring they don't need.

For EL users, price = exactly the same prior to the change
For non EL users, price = cheaper

WEX haven't explained this very well though unfortunately...

I've had mine for 6 years & only the Deep 100 Octa has a small amount of the silver peeling near the speeding end but this gets used the most to be fair You just need to take care of them when setting up or stripping down. Definitely don't let some who doesn't know how to do it 'offer to help'! I love the way they're so fast to put up for a shoot. Saves so much time on a working day.

Personally find SMDV to be the quickest up and down
