Elements 7 help please !!!

I bought Elements 7 two weeks ago and all is good , I've ordered the new elements 7 for dummies book off amazon and cant wait for it to arrive !

need a bit of help though please if someone can

Now i'm not sure if this is possible , but I've been out and had a go at some light trails , they're ok ish for a first attempt , what I'd like to do is lay three shots on top of each other to make one ( there wasn't much traffic on the road!!)

Is this possible with my software ? I've tried the help pages but cant see anything , if its too long winded to explain then fair enough , but if anyone knows or can explain or even point me to a link then i'd appreciate it very much

Its just not happening , its something i'm not quite grasping or understanding I think ,

better wait till the book arrives , before I pull my hair out

Can you explain a bit better what you are trying to do and where you get stuck?

Basically I want to put one image on top of another , they're essentially the same shot ( used tripod) each image has different light trails and different exposure times and i want to try to make one good image out of two ,

I cant get one layer on top of the other , i think i'm not grasping something regarding the whole layers thing

when i do what the ADOBE help page states it just doesnt happen

do i make a "duplicate layer" of each image and work with that ?

Maybe a bit of basic reading-up on layers will help:

The intro from Adobe is here.

An explanation of the layers palette, which you'll need to activate to see and understand what is going on, is here.

Essentially all you need to do is copy one image and paste it on top of the other. At this point, all you will be able to see is the top layer. You'll then need to erase the parts of the top layer that you don't want. From you're description, that'll be everything except the car trails. As you erase the bits you don't want from the top layer, the corresponding bits of the bottom layer will show through.

time to do a bit of reading methinks
 
While you're figuring out how to use layers you could just open up both Images & clone the light trails from one to the other.


It might lack the finess of layers but it does work :)
 
Just a point on layers
If you want the layers to "show through" and combine you can change the opacity in the layers pallet.
The top layer having the least i.e. top=33%, middle=66%, bottom=100%.
These ratios are not fixed and you can play with the combinations to get the required effect.

If you cropped the upper layers to show the required areas and you just want one layed on top of the other leave all the layers at 100%.


That's it - go creative :)

Thats exactly what i was doing wrong
