had a browse round WHSmith this evening

saw a good book on Elements6, also some on 7 and 8

for a beginner - dont want a lot of post-editing - is Elements 6 enough ?

whats the advantage - for me - of 7 or 8 ?

thanks

What version of elements do you have? Or are you looking at that also!?

PE6 is good, but if youhave Vista, I wouldn't bother...get the later editions.

One of the biggest issues with using an older version is camera compatability with RAW, if you have a newer camera theres a fair chance it won't be compatable if you use raw format. If you have a new-ish camera it's probably worth getting the latest version if you can afford it.

Surely you can just update the Camera RAW application,I use Elements 6 with a very modern Canon so that shouldn't be an issue

Can't really comment on how many more features 8 has, but I find 6 adequate for my needs, I looked when 7 came out and it was a very minor upgrade

thanks -using a Nikon D40 and TBH i cannot see me shooting in RAW

I tend to be a bit low-key technically and dont want to spend too much time editing in front of a PC

I'm probably looking for a basic setup - hence Paint.Net - but did wonder if I could move to PE6...thanks

Sadly it's not quite that simple, Adobe have a habit of stopping or cutting back support for a version once a newer one is released, ACR (camera raw) is then not updated for the older version. For elements 6 I think acr 5.2 or 5.4 are the latest versions that will work (we are on 5.6 now) so the newer cameras like for example the 7d won't be compatable. The situations even worse with the full version of photoshop, then with every new version support totally stops.

I've just got elements 6 to compliment NX2. I use NX2 for developing the picture but needed something extra for photoshopping. I've had no issues with it using vista.

Elements 6 is fine. I'm using it as a way to get my head around Adobes way as Photoshop is way too indepth for me and i find Elements suits my needs just fine.

I'm using it with a D50 and Windows 7 just fine and dandy.

I'm using E6 on Vista and have no problems. If you're buying from scartch I'd think the latest version would be the best to go for. For me there's not enough extra in 7 or 8 to upgrade so I'll wait a few months for 9 and see what that's like.
