Electronic shutter indoor banding - will it ever be fixed ?

Yes
I was with a client this week who at the end of a shoot asked for some indoor none flash images. I started shooting with the mechanical shutter but even the quiet shutter was reminding them i was just in front. I popped the ZF into silent which i rarely use and immediately they seemed more relaxed which i preferred.

Back home when processing i realised the banding problem had struck. I only had a couple of minutes at the end of shoot for this aspect so didn't check on screen these last few images taken on silent but even if i had i'd have just gone back to mechanical and lost the silence i was benefiting from. They were moving around quite a bit as part of the role play so wanted a high shutter speed to freeze them.

After reviewing the initial images on mechanical are fine but given the choice i'd have probably issued a couple from the 'quiet' last batch i took as well.

Is this something that will always be a problem on electronic shutter or have others found a workaround ? - I rarely use it so not a major issue for me but did catch me out on this occasion.

Hopefully others who've yet to fall foul of this lovely feature can benefit here :)

Many thanks in advance.

I believe it's mostly down to the speed of the electronic shutter so the cameras with high speed stacked sensors (like the Nikon Z8/Z9, Sony A1/A9 and some of the Canons) have a much faster readout which reduces banding.

The tech is already here. But you’ll need to pony up for the Global Shuttle in the shape of Sony A9iii
