Elan Dams/Reservoir, Wales

They were on sunday, i went down there at the weekend and to the red kite feeding station.
Not sure what times they let them overflow, i was there from about 1pm so if you go for around lunch then i think you should be okay.

Water spills over the dams pretty much most of the time; providing we have not had too much of a dry spell. In the last 15 years of visiting the Elan Valley (2 or 3 times a year), I have only ever seen them dry twice.

If you are going out there, can I recommend doing the journey out to Carewyn? Dam. Also, if you can, get out there first thing in the morning, before the sun comes over the mountains. That way you will find the lakes as still as a looking glass.

With all the recent rainfall wondered if the water is flowing over the dams and what the best time and place to catch them is, we're down near Builth Wells next week.
Just email the visitor centre and they will tell you up to date info

Just got following response from the ranger, not looking hopeful then!

The water only flows over the dams after heavy rainfall. The best time to see this is in winter. The water has been coming over during the recent bad weather but has stopped now that we’re having a dry spell. Feel free to give us a ring before you come (01597 810898) if you want to know the latest situation, but it’s impossible to predict in advance I’m afraid.

Best wishes,

Rob Andrew
