Been saving for a while now for the new EF300mm 2.8 mk11 and have just been given two old kenko DG pro 300 convertors 1.4 & 2.0, just wondering would they work with the new lens ? has anyone tried this setup ? would i lose auto focus, or do I need to save some more money.

Already thinking that if spending that amount on new lens extra £400 would not make a lot of difference.

Comments welcome, and thanks in advance. :)

They should work with your lens when you get it.

This is a link for the most recent version of these converters, but the basic principles should hold true.

The general consensus is that 1.4x converters are more useful than 2x; less loss of image quality and and only 1 stop of light loss.

The only compatability problems I have heard about are with Canon's own extenders. They only work with certain L telephoto and zoom lenses. They will work with the lens you're planing to buy.

Seeing how much the new 300 f2.8 IS L MKII is then i would think it would be worth getting the new MKIII tc's if you are after the ultimate IQ and performance from the lens.

The new MKIII tc's have been designed especially for the new MKII super tele lenses and not only give an advantage in image quality but also in A/F performance when used with the new MKII lenses due to a chip inside the tc but they also give better contrast on the earlier lenses but without the A/F improvement.

Have a read of this

I am sure that the Kenkos will work but if you are investing in one of the best pieces of glass that Canon make i would at least save up for the 2x MKIII at some point,i now have both the MKII and MKIII tc's and the only one i use is the MKIII which even gives better IQ on the 70-200 f2.8 IS L MKII due to less chromatic aberration.

Not knowing what you shoot it may not be worth the extra for A/F performance or IQ to yourself but looking at the MTF charts for the new MKII 300 being used with the new MKIII tc's its the main reason i may be upgrading my 300 2.8 IS L MKI to the new version if i stick with the 1D MKIV rather than upgrade to the 1D X.

I can safely say that the old one was no slouch as i used it with a 2x tc MKII 30% of the time and its a lot easier and versatile to carry round than a 500 or 600 so the MKII should be amazing.

Here is a sample of the MKI 300 f2.8 IS L with the MKII 2x tc on a 7D.

The 300/2.8 IS MkI is very good with a 2x tc as Glen shows above.I used one very often for bird photography when I had the 300/2.8 and it made a super 600/5.6 combo. From everything I have read the MkII is even better especially if used with MkIII converters. If I were spending out on a 300/2.8 MkII I would definitely go for the mkIII converters.

I use the Kenko DG pr 1.4x Teleconvertor on my 100-400L and it works okay if you tape a few of the contacts so you get AF.

Image results do get degraded a tad but nothing that a little PP'ing wont fix.

I've just picked up a 70-200 f2.8L and will probaly invest in a 2x Mk3 Canon convertor when I can afford it.

you're spending 6k on a lens but want to put a 70 quid converter on it....won't do it justice at all

The Kenko DG pro isn't a £70 convertor, it costs a lot more than that.

It's probably one of the best TCs you can buy.

Erm. Just Erm!

Ok, it's not quite as good as the Canon TCs but don't underestimate them!

I've used the mk2 Canon and both the Kenko DP pro and NC7 x2 TCs. The Canon focused faster but the Kenko TCs were pretty much identical in IQ, on a crop at least. I have heard the NC7 exhibit corner softness on FF but that doesn't concern me!

Still, why would you buy a 6k lens and use a 3rd party converter that won't do it justice? Just don't understand it myself

What's the evidence that these converters won't do justice and also they were free, it's not as though he's spending any hard earned cash on them.

Thank you all for your input, when I get the lens will have a play with the Kenko, but will probably purchase the new convertor in the end.
