Finally got myself one of those legendary EF 28-105 f3.5/4.5 mk 2s, the "metal mount/made in japan/says the word macro" version that I keep reading is the one to have... can't wait for it to arrive!

Has anyone else got one of these? Are they as good as people say (by which I means a gnats away from the 24-105L) or is that rubbish? Anything to watch out for?

Phil
Now to start researching a decent wide angle...

I bought one second hand for my 350D and had it for quite a while. It was a great lens but it developed an AF problem. I searched on the net to see if it was a common problem and didn't find anything so I guess I was unlucky.

Sample image taken with it:

I've got one of these. It's a reasonable lens, but it needs to be stopped down a bit if you want to aim for a sharp image

Sorry to hear it, I'm now hoping that's not a common issue... and lovely shot, where is that?

Thanks for the tip. The reason I'm buying this is that it's meant to be very sharp, so I'll be stopping it down a bit then I guess.

No I don't think it is common, I searched the net and didn't find anyone with a similar problem. The photo is of Thornton Abbey not far from where I live.

I have one
Fairly sharp wide open
stop it down even 2/3 and it is a beaut.

Shame I never use it as the range it covers is of little use to me.

I go up to Lincs a fair bit, gonna have to look that up - mind you I normally just go to Stamford and rarely have the opportunity to go togging.

I've just read such good things about it, I'm guessing it'll make a nice walk about lens with the short end being ok for landscapes? I want something a bit shorter too but will have to start saving again now!
