I am pondering over this lens as a new addition. I have read several reviews etc and have noticed that a few say it is better suited to a full frame, not a 1.6 crop as is my 30D.

I am also concerned at a few threads I have read about good and bad copies of this lens. I would have thought forking out a lot of hard earned money would have given me the right to a perfect copy apparently not.

I like the look of the 24/105 also but that again is supposed to be for full frame cameras.
Am I worrying over nothing here ? and will these lenses be perfectly ok with a 30D.
Thanks

Don't be silly. Its a great lens on a 30D. Go and buy it. I have one and use it all the time.

Both are fab on any camera!! I've got the 24-105 and its never off my camera, but with the 24-70 you do get the extra stop ie f2.8 good for low light etc..

Hi shorn - no easy answer from me, but I have a 30d, and had a 24-105, and sold it for a 17-55 f2.8 - both IS - for me, the extra aperture makes a big difference, as does the wider angle. The 24-105 worked perfectly well on my 30d, but didn't suit my needs so well. I have no knowledge of the 24-70, but guess it works perfectly well with the 30d.
So, I would say, have a play with both, and maybe add the 17-55 to the list - unless you plan to go full frame, then it is a stonking lens, and suits my needs perfectly !
By the way, if any of your friends in Mojacar are interested, tell them to head out to El Marchal - the far side of Bedar, towards Lubrin and to hit the bar there, as I have a small exhibition going on from Saturday onwards for 3 weeks - Saturday, being the opening night there is live music from Clive Sarstead (one of the Sarstead brothers - remember the song 'Windmills of my mind', by Peter Sarstead - his brother Clive is playing..)

Cheers and good luck,
Steve

Thanks for the reassurances :)
But what about all this I hear about bad copies.... do I just buy, try and return if not happy ?

Hello Steve :) friends just left england to go back to mojacar after doing a quick extension to fund their Thailand trip.
I will certainly pass the addy on and if a big brusier, ginger and from leicester arrives, get him to buy you a drink on my behalf :)
Will be back in Spain early next year, will have to meet up for a few San Miguels :)

ps. I will have a look at the 17/55 's

Hello again Steve, just had a look at your gallery pics, great portrait shots, which lens did you use for these ?

The 24-70 has a stellar reputation for image quality.

You might hear on the internet about a few 'bad' copies, but you don't hear about the thousands and thousands that people use every day with no problems.

The reason some people say it's better suited to a full-frame camera is because 24mm really isn't very wide at all on a 30D. Most people prefer a walk-around lens that goes a bit wider. Hence the 17-55 as an alternative.

Shorn - I think I used the 24-105 for most, and the 50 1.8 for the colour close up of Jessie - this was before I got the 17-55.
I'll look out for some bruiser from Leicester, though I wont be at the bar too much, and wonder if my wife, who is from Loughborough knows him...?
See you next year !

Don't forget if you get the 24-70 an upgrade to a full frame or even 1.3 crop, the lens will still work. When they say full frame it doens't mean it wont work on the crop sensor, just that it will work on a full frame.

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated.

Steve he is a brickie called Tony Mansell his cousinns are another load of brickies, the Brights, but they all still live here in Newqauy.

I've just recently bought the Canon 24-70 L and it is very very impressive. The Build quality is as expected from L glass quality.
Once the Photograph is up on the screen for editing i have noticed that fantastic colour depth and the sharpness is awesome

I know the lens is expensive but it is worth every penny and as natjag states if you want to upgrade you body to full frame it will be fully compatible.

buy it if you have the money imo
