Eek! I need some help deciding on which lens to get with my new 5d I will be able to buy (after one yr of saving) at the end of may.

Now, I can get the 24-105mm lens, or I can get the 50mm prime f1.2.
they are both great lenses, and I know they can do different jobs, but my photograophy varies.

I like to shoot portraiture and I like to shoot wildlife. I like it all, so I cant decide on which lens I can get purely by the type of photography I do!!

I cant buy them both (I bloody wish) as you may all sympathise with the budget problem!! ha ha ha

Has anyone got these lenses? What do you think???

I have to say, i am pretty happy i actually have this predicament, it means i am near buying my new baby!! YAY

Thanks everyone :)

Hiya Kate,

Congrats on getting the camera you've lusted for for such a long time.

Erm...re wildlife, you're not gonna get frame filling shots of many subjects using a 50mm and will struggle even with a 24-105 although you can "get closer" with this particular lens.

You'll probably be able to save some money if you get the 5D with the 24-105 (I believe this is the standard kit lens for the 5D.

I'd highly recommend a prime (fixed focal length) lens for high quality wildlife shots, preferably something like a 300mm f2.8 or f4.

thanks for your reply Mrkta
I really am confused as to which one would suit me best. I just said wildlife as an example, I shoot everything!!! So really, I need a good all rounder lens, wouldnt you say?

I don't think there is an all-rounder for a 5D (or any other body for that matter).

If you're serious about portraiture then I'd advise going for the 85/1.2L before the 50/1.2L. Both are fine lenses but the 85L is that extra bit special on a 5D. I use both these on a 5D but 50mm is just a little too personal for all situations.

For wildlife I think you'll be needing 400mm minimum to avoid heavy cropping.

Bob

Yep, the 85mm prime is absolutely perfect portrait lens for a full frame camera such as the 5D. Forgot to mention that on my OP, but Bob has...

As you say you'll be into all types of photography, for landscapes, you need something like a 17-40mm L or 16-35, so as Bob rightly says, no one lens is suitable for all types of photography.

Even if you consider say a Sigma 50-500mm lens, it wouldn't be wide enough for landscapes, but would cover portraits, macro (although not true 1:1 real life size shots of say insects), wildlife etc.

Hi Kate. I bought the 24-105 with the 5D as the kit, and it is a great walkaround combination, so I would highly recommend it for that. Plus, you save about £100 or so in comparison to the cost of buying the two separately. I think it's probably more versatile to buy a zoom rather than a prime first off, and then add other lenses as you shape your photography further. For instance, my preference is for landscapes, so I added the 16-35mm to my stable earlier this year. I also have the 70-200mm f/4, because, well, everyone should have one of those ;) - still the sharpest, best value, make-you-smile lens in the bag.

Unless you've got something sharper that makes you smile more....:p

The 85L is just truly stunning IMO. I've stated before that it's not a length I generally use...sadly....but it is a stunning lens.

Bob

Totally agree Bob. Was just mentioning it as it's one of the widest range lenses on the market, in response to the point of a do-it-all lens.

I'd imagine that IQ would suffer especially at the zoom end, on a lens with such a wide range. Have never used one myself...

Cheers, Mark

My vote would be to go for the 70-200 f4.... with IS if your budget with stretch that far....

covers all the standard portraight lengths 85mm.....135mm etc..

probably my second most used lens..... (100 macro being the most..)

I also have the 24-105...and hardly use it.....

just my opinion

Dave.

PS. I am the same as you...If I want camera toys.... I have to save..... (dont own a credit card).

Just dis a quick EXIF survey of my images. 24-105 55% 17-40 25% 100-400 20% All on 5D

Probably doesn't help a lot, but the 24 -105 is a good general purpose lens.

Thanks guys!!!!
i think i am going to go for the standard 'kit' and then save up for the nifty fifty!!
Or the 85??? see, with photography, you are always left wanting more he he he

xxx

ps: i too have to save to buy new toys, hence the whole waiting for a year to get this, and i know it doesnt sound alot to most, but i am THE most impatient person ever! lol

Lol. I know the feeling and I'm sure many others on here can relate to it too.

Well I did have a list of things to get for this year. Got the list down from 12 items to 5, but has now increased to 8...ARRRGGGGHHH! hehe

Anyway, glad we helped collectively.

Mark

canon cashback time.weve just bought a 5d with 24-105. lovely to use. we got it for wedding work .the range is better than the 24-70 even if we loose a few F,s.
weve got the 100-400 too, but that wouldnt be much use for protrait work, and its b****y expensive.
were thinking about a 50/1.2 for portrait when funds allow.:'(

i think the 5d is £150 cashback and the 24-105mm L has £45 meaning thats £195 cashback you are getting back. You could buy a 50mm F1.4 or a flash.
